At the Mar-Mac Public Safety Commission’s March 3 meeting, it was determined the Mar-Mac Unified Law Enforcement District will complete its requirements for the grant officer position in early May, bringing the department down to a three-man force—the police chief and two officers.

The position was expected to end by March, but was pushed to May after officer Delta Stickfort took a leave of absence to train for a new job, which she eventually accepted. In October, Eric Van Horn was selected to finish out the position.

The McGregor District office of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is moving from its current location along Highway 18, between Marquette and McGregor, to Prairie du Chien, effective March 30.

“The office we have now, there are safety concerns from mud and rocks,” said McGregor District Manager Rich King, noting that some falling rocks have damaged vehicles. “There are also mold and moisture concerns.”

King said the Refuge has sought a new home for the district office for some time.

“We’ve been looking for land next to the flood plain, but not in the flood plain,” he said.

Several Monona streets will be chip sealed when the weather warms up, including stretches of Main Street from Kregel Street to Iowa Street and from the railroad tracks to the edge of town. Hill Street, starting at Iowa Street and going north, will also be done, as will Anderson Street from Center Street to North Street and both North and Center Streets from Hill Street to West Street.

Chip sealing involves applying a thin film of heated asphalt liquid to the street surface, then placing “chips,” which are compacted and adhere to the asphalt.

Both Chase Strub and Gatlin Keehner returned to MFL MarMac High School Sunday as state wrestling medal winners. Strub placed seventh in the class 1A 195-pound weight class, while Keehner was eighth in the 285-pound weight class.

The tournament, held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines from Feb. 19-21, was the first trip to state for Strub and Keehner, who are both seniors.

The first round was tough for both wrestlers, as Strub lost 5-3 in overtime to Brennen Grimm of English Valleys, the eventual third-place winner. Keehner came out on the wrong end of a 9-3 decision to Clarksville’s Skyler Popham, who claimed sixth place.
