Street repairs planned in Monona

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

Mill and overlay work will be done on several Monona streets this summer after the council gave the go-ahead Monday night.

“This winter, pot holes really opened up,” explained Randy Evanson, speaking to the council.

He said 34 spots need to be addressed, with North Main Street, from the railroad tracks to the edge of town, being the worst. South Main Street, from Kregel Street to Iowa Street, also has several areas that will be addressed. In addition, some work will also be completed on Center Street between Hill Street and West Street, as well as on both Hill Street and Anderson Street, between Center Street and North Street.

The Monona location of the outsourced telesales services firm QCSS is looking to grow, expanding from a current staff of 18 to over 60.

Located at 106 N. Page St., across from the library, the call center was acquired by QCSS from Greene and Associates in 2012.

They work with 60 to 70 clients, serving as an adjunct to  inside sales teams, explained Karin Hall, co-founder of QCSS, which is headquartered in Deer Park, Ill. That means staff make outbound telesales calls, selling products and services, like publishing content or software, or checking in with companies’ previous customers. They also make political calls.

The late Roger Halvorson was honored at the state capitol in Des Moines last month in a ceremony recognizing former legislators who had recently passed away. He was one of 19 people who were remembered at the ceremony, which included music and the reading of a bio about each politician.

It was an emotional moment for the family, shared Roger’s wife, Connie, who was married to Roger for nearly 60 years, as the family hadn’t been to the capitol since Roger finished out his 11th, and final, term in office in 1996. He began serving Clayton County in 1974.

“There was a lot of information about who served,” she said. “It was very nice, and I’m glad the family could all be there and remember those times.”

The McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts (MMCA) opened for the season May 15 and unveiled its first special exhibit of the year, “Arthur’s Gift,” which features the 22 hand-colored etchings donated to the MMCA by children’s book author and illustrator Arthur Geisert, who created the etchings for his book “River Town.” One in a series of “Town” books created by Geisert that reflect the activities in small towns, “River Town” shows the day-to-day life, over one year, of a community situated along a major river.

Geisert was on-hand at the opening, signing copies of his books. He also took time to discuss the book and the etchings with those in attendance.

Tri-City Golf Course celebrates 75 years

Tri-City Golf Club, nestled in the hills outside Luana, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

Tri-City is a 2,821-yard, nine-hole public golf course with a par of 34.

“It’s one of the top 10 courses for greenness in the whole state,” member Dwain Wolter boasted of Tri-City.

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

“It’s sometimes referred to as the course nobody knows about because it’s out in the middle of nowhere,” recounted clubhouse manager Jackie Radloff Schneider of Tri-City Golf Course, which is nestled in the hills outside Luana.

While “one of the best kept secrets in Northeast Iowa” (according to long-time member Donna Thompson) might be off the radar of some, it’s been filled with history for many. This year, Tri-City celebrates 75 years.
