Severna A. DaVelaar

Severna A. DaVelaar, 98, formerly of Waterloo and Evansdale, died Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center, Traer.

She was born May 20, 1917, in Ridgeway, daughter of Severn and Anna Langan Olson. She married Lester Pillard in 1936 and they later divorced. She married John W. DaVelaar on Aug. 11, 1945, in Galena, Ill.; he died March 27, 2003.

A 1934 graduate of McGregor High School, Severna and her husband owned and operated both Jax Tavern and Evansdale Furniture Store for 20 years, retiring in 1970.

The taste of wellness

Farm to School Month connects students with locally-grown foods

October is National Farm to School Month, a celebration of the growing connection between students and healthy, locally-grown food. MFL MarMac is one of over 40,000 schools across the country to participate in the program, with kids sampling and learning about several new foods throughout the month.

“The dietary department provided samples of recipes created with locally-grown produce through Taste Test Tuesdays, including cabbage, zucchini and sweet potatoes,” explained McGregor Center nurse Jennelle Schroeder, who also handles the middle school’s wellness activities.

Marquette Council candidates talk tourism, economic development and more

Marquette residents will take to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, to elect a new mayor and two new council members. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marquette Community Center.

Current mayor Norma Mason chose not to run again, and no candidates filed for the position, leaving the election of the mayor up to write-in votes. To-date, the North Iowa Times is aware that Larry Breuer and David Schneider have declared themselves as write-in candidates. In order for the vote to count, their full names must be used.

Lund brings chiropractic practice to Marquette

Dr. Kari Lund has brought her comprehensive chiropractic care to Marquette. Her office recently opened downtown, at 129 North St.

A graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractic, Lund began her career in La Crosse, working for Dr. Linda Lorenz. She started her own practice in Prairie du Chien in 1996.

“I’ve been doing it awhile,” said Lund, who noted her interest in chiropractic began when she was seven and suffered from health issues. A chiropractor offered an alternative to drugs and surgery, helping her overcome her challenges.

“I had a great experience as a kid, and it stuck with me,” she added.

Marquette Council discusses Wetlands Centre staffing changes

Effective Nov. 30, the city of Marquette will terminate its full-time Wetlands Centre and tourism and economic development director position.

Katrina Moyna, who has held the full-time post since earlier this year, has not worked since August due to illness. Speaking to the city council at its regular meeting Oct. 20, city manager Dean Hilgerson said there is no anticipated date for her return. Since the council was already due to re-evaluate the necessity of a full-time position in November, heading into the slower winter months, he said the city’s personnel committee felt it was best to terminate it.

McGregor seeks community support in purchasing Victorian holiday decorations

At its regular meeting Oct. 21, the McGregor Council agreed to purchase new holiday decorations— a nine-piece set of life-size Victorian people and a sleigh—for Triangle Park.

The decorations are expected to cost around $2,800, funding for which will partially come from the sale of some city personal property, such as desks, a coat rack and some outdoor equipment, including a mower. The city hopes residents might also be willing to contribute to the fund.

“We’d like to see something nice,” said mayor Harold Brooks, as Triangle Park is one of the focal points of the community.

McGregor Council candidates share thoughts

McGregor residents will take to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, to elect a mayor and two council members. Incumbent mayor Harold Brooks is running unopposed for a two-year term, but the two council seats are up for grabs, with incumbents Rogeta Halvorson and Joe Muehlbauer taking on newcomer Jason Echard for four-year terms. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the McGregor Public Library.

Incumbent Rogeta Halvorson is the daughter of Roger and Connie Halvorson and has three siblings, a daughter, son-in-law and grandson. She is currently the executive director of the Monona Chamber and Economic Development.

Snack pack program receives funds, continues to aid local children

Several local ladies, including (left) Laura Nozal, Jackie Lamb, Kathryn Starkey, Darlene Wilker, Bona Dean Feller and Deb Moon, helped fill snack packs for MFL MarMac elementary students last week at Living Faith United Methodist Church in McGregor. The snack packs are distributed confidentially, before each weekend, to students in need, to supplement food received at home. With the help of some local church volunteers, area kids in need are getting “snack packs” of food to tide them over during weekends away from the school’s regularly-provided meals.

Snack pack distribution began in 2009, kickstarted by Bona Dean Feller, who, the year prior, attended a United Methodist Celebrate Women Day in Texas, where a presentation was given on a similar program. Upon returning home, she contacted MFL MarMac elementary principal Kathy Koether and Mary Kleve, who was the guidance counselor at that time, to learn if a local program was needed.

Wetlands Centre welcomes Russian visitors

Last week, Marquette’s Driftless Area Wetlands Centre hosted two representatives from Russia’s Khakassky State Nature Reserve, as part of the Russia-USA Wetland Center Exchange Program: Linking People and Wetlands project.

The Wetlands Centre was one of three wetlands centers in the United States chosen to participate in the project, which seeks to identify shared challenges organizations in the U.S. and Russia face in regard to wetlands education and outreach.

Two new businesses have joined the ranks of the Monona business community, with the opening of the Clean and Fresh Laundromat and Decor and More at the corner of Main and Center Streets.

The laundromat, opened by Kenny Johanningmeier, was the brainchild of his daughter, Ashlee Johanningmeier, who also opened Decor and More with her friend, Chelsi Brainard.

“We were in here cleaning up and I thought it would be an amazing spot for a laundromat,” said Ashlee of the area at the front of the building that now houses Clean and Fresh.
