Weller honored with Quilt of Valor

Since its inception in 2003, when quilter and blue star mother Catherine Roberts came up with the idea of using quilts to comfort veterans while her son was deployed in Iraq, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded over 118,000 quilts to service members and veterans touched by war.

Last week, 92-year-old McGregor resident Meda Weller became one of the latest to receive a Quilt of Valor, recognizing her service to the United States, through the Army Nurse Corps, at the end of World War II.

Father and son experience once-in-a-lifetime horse ride

Each spring, for over 40 years, the Sombrero Ranches in northwest Colorado have led the Great American Horse Drive, where those associated with the ranch, as well as a number of visiting participants, help guide hundreds of horses over many miles back to the ranches from their winter pasture.

This year, father and son Josh and Gavyn Wade, who live in Giard, took part in the annual tradition, living the lives of authentic cowboys for several days.

This year’s Monona Hay Days, held Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, will look to “welcome home” attendees. The theme ties into the celebration in several ways, shared Monona Chamber and Economic Development Executive Director Rogeta Halvorson, who’s worked with the committee organizing the event.

“It’s a welcome home back to downtown, to veterans and to classes and alumni,” she explained.

In the past, Halvorson said, Hay Days was held downtown, but, in later years, moved to the city park. The committee initially considered holding events in both areas, but settled on downtown to keep activities centralized and allow for more space.

Old Man River, MMCA partner in growler design contest

Through a label design contest, growlers of beer sold at Old Man River in McGregor will soon get a unique touch, while also benefitting the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts.

Growlers of beer sold at Old Man River Restaurant and Brewery in McGregor will soon get a makeover, and raise money for a good cause, thanks to a partnership between Old Man River and the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts (MMCA) to design a growler label.

A growler is a 64-ounce glass jar, and most feature their brewery’s logo, said Allison Roberts, of Old Man River.

Roberts said art classes held at the MMCA several months ago inspired the idea, the profits from which will benefit the MMCA and its programs.

The Henkes family’s roots in Northeast Iowa run deep.

“There’s been a Henkes here since 1855,” said Trent, who, with wife Leslie and son Matt, runs the family’s six-generation farm, Henkeseen Holsteins, on 165th Street in rural Luana. “I’ve lived here all my life and farmed all my life.”

MFL MarMac to contribute to Turner Park improvements

The MFL MarMac School Board agreed Monday evening at its monthly meeting to contribute $20,000 of local option sales tax funds toward phase I of McGregor’s Turner Park: Fitness for All Ages project through a 28E agreement, which would allow the school to use the park for activities and practices.

Holiday Shores Motel sold

The Holiday Shores Riverfront Motel, located along the McGregor riverfront, next to Mr. McGregor’s Beer and Bratz Garden, was sold last week. Motel operations ceased and any reservations were canceled.

“Trilogy Partners, LLC has purchased the building site from Waterside Investment, which operated the Holiday Shores Motel,” confirmed Terry Kerns, who will manage the project. Kerns is also an owner of Edgewood Locker. “We are currently looking at options to improve the building site. We are excited for the opportunity to further the economic development of McGregor and we look forward to being a long-term member of the McGregor community.”

William Francis Olinger, Esq.

William Francis Olinger, Esq., 76, of Sanibel, Fla. died Feb. 25, 2015 at Health Park Memorial Center, Fort Myers, Fla., after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa, a son of Ermin and Augusta (Schares) Olinger. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, University of Iowa, class of 1960, University of Iowa School of Law, class of 1964 with a Juris Doctorate. He served in the Marine Corps. He was a founding partner of Olinger, Sosalla & McManus and later his own firm William F. Olinger P.C. He was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocacy.

Bird flu halts poultry showing at Iowa fairs

Due to avian influenza, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) recently announced an order to cancel all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the state fair and other bird gatherings. The order, which will run through the end of 2015, also prohibits live birds from being sold at auction markets, swap meets and other sales.

Although the Center for Disease Control and the Iowa Department of Public Health consider the risk to the public to be low, the order will work to minimize the risk and spread of the virus. According to IDALS, since April, over 25 million birds and more than 60 farms in 18 Iowa counties have been impacted by avian influenza.

Iowa free fishing weekend is June 5-7

Iowa residents may fish without a license Friday through Sunday, June 5-7, during the DNR’s annual free fishing weekend.

“We want people to fish because it is a good, wholesome activity,” said Joe Larscheid, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Fisheries Bureau, in a press release.

Since kids can fish for free in the state until age 16, the weekend is largely geared toward adults, said local DNR conservation officer Burt Walters.

“It gives people the chance to try it and see if they like it,” he said. “It’s like going to a basketball game without having to buy a ticket. If they like it, we hope they’ll go out and buy a license.”
