Annual Luana Daze celebration is Aug. 26-27

Luana Daze, held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26 and 27, will again feature the Tough Scrambler obstacle course race. The event, which promises to be even muddier this year, will take participants on a 2.5-mile trek through over 10 obstacles. (NIT file photo)

Head to Luana this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26 and 27, for the community’s annual Luana Daze celebration.

This year’s event features some popular, long-time activities along with several new ones.

Luana Daze will kick off bright and early Saturday morning, with the Luana Community Club’s pancake and sausage breakfast, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and running until 10 a.m.

Todd Olson, owner of the Luana Tap, will also offer his famous Bloody Marys and mimosas starting at 7:30 a.m.

Hager provides more details on plan for Luster Heights

State Rep. Kristi Hager (R - Waukon) has released more details regarding a proposed plan to utilize Luster Heights Correctional Facility as a faith-based, non-profit, transitional living center for individuals coming out of jail/prison or struggling with homelessness or substance abuse issues.

Hager, as part of “Citizens for Luster Heights,” has authored a petition asking the state of Iowa for a five-year lease of the facility, located outside Harpers Ferry, which was closed in February due to Department of Corrections (DOC)—and state—budget cuts.

Days numbered for pedestrian bridge

The days are numbered for McGregor’s well-known pedestrian bridge, which spans across B Street. Already in need of repair prior to the July 19 tornado, the bridge is no longer salvageable.

City administrator Lynette Sander, speaking at McGregor’s regular council meeting Aug. 16, said the city was awarded FEMA funding following last September’s heavy rains, to repair the footing of the bridge at the south end, where the soil eroded. Those funds are still being held in a city account.

McGregor’s Determination Park to be dedicated in honor of Breitbach

At its Aug. 16 meeting, the McGregor Council unanimously approved a request by Maria Brummel, on behalf of the city’s park board, to dedicate Determination Park in memory of long-time resident Dave Breitbach.

Breitbach, who passed away in June as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, served on the park board for roughly 15 years.

When he joined, said Brummel, one of his goals was to help develop a park that had been promised to the lot owners in the Ridgewood West Subdivision, by Eagle Drive. “He was very forthright about it,” she noted with a smile.

Cynthia “Cyndi” Moberg, 64 of McGregor, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

 

She was born May 25, 1953, to Joseph and Helen Blahut in Pittsburgh, Penn. Cynthia graduated from St. Michaels Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Ardyth “Ardie” Ellen (Stee) Weller, 84, of McGregor, died Monday, Aug. 14, in Pittsburgh, Penn. 

 

Ardie was born on Nov. 27, 1932, in Castalia, to Clifford and Mayme (Jones) Stee. She graduated from Postville High School in Postville, with the class of 1951.

McGregor woman drives car into Mississippi River

A McGregor woman escaped injury after driving her vehicle into the Mississippi River, by Lansing, Monday evening.

On Aug. 14, at 5:25 p.m., the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a person that had driven into the Mississippi River, off of Front Street, in Lansing.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the driver, Michelle Rose Timmons, 51, of McGregor, was able to escape from the vehicle and swim toward the shoreline. Bystanders helped her out of the water, but she then left the scene. 

Bystanders went to the Lansing Fire Station, notifying firemen that Timmons had driven her vehicle into the water.

Crozier nominated for 2017 Superintendent of the Year

MFL MarMac Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier was recognized as a nominee for the School Administrators of Iowa (SAI) 2017 Superintendent of the Year award at a ceremony Aug. 2.

“Each AEA nominates a superintendent,” said Crozier, who was the representative from the Keystone Area Education Agency. “Your peers nominate you, so that’s always cool.”

Crozier, who’s also the superintendent at Eastern Allamakee, has served at MFL MarMac for 17 years. This is the second time he’s been nominated for the award.

Hager advocating for lease of Luster Heights as faith-based, nonprofit, transitional living center

Six months after budget cuts forced the closure of Luster Heights Correctional Facility, located outside Harpers Ferry, District 56 State Rep. Kristi Hager is hoping to put the dormant facility to use.

Hager, as part of “Citizens for Luster Heights,” has authored a petition asking the state of Iowa to lease the facility for use as a faith-based, nonprofit, transitional living center for individuals coming out of jail/prison or struggling with homelessness or substance abuse issues.

“I am one who believes, when one door closes, another opens,” Hager noted in the petition narrative.

Nationally-known motivational speaker coming to MFL MarMac

Community members encouraged to attend

On Wednesday, Aug. 23—the first day of school—MFL MarMac students, staff and even community members won’t just embark on a new year. They’ll hopefully gain a new mindset and perspective on life, too.

Nationally-recognized motivational speaker Trevor Ragan will lead several sessions at the district that day, including an evening session for the community, highlighting the importance of growth mindset.

People all too often have a fixed mindset, said Brent Pape, a middle school teacher and also one of MFL MarMac’s TLC instructional coaches.
