City of Marquette’s latest solar project nears completion

The city council approved the $300,000 project in April following six months of discussion. While members were supportive of solar powering the site, the biggest hold-up was concern over the location of the ground arrays, which are built into Iowa DOT hillside property between U.S. Highway 18 and the sewer plant. Some didn’t like the idea of the panels being so visible to visitors entering town from the west.

Central athletic director talks COVID-19 impact on fall sports

A new school year dawns, and so does a season of sports against the backdrop of COVID-19. Students will return to the halls, the courts and the fields chasing victory, not just against opponents, but also against an unfamiliar and ever-changing set of challenges—challenges that, according to Central Principal and Athletic Director Aaron Reinhart, have made it difficult to plan because every plan hinges on an untold number of outside factors.

“We’re making a plan and then making a new plan before the original plan was used,” Reinhart commented. “It’s just so many changes and most with short notice.”

With school set to start, MFL MarMac provides more Return to Learn details

The MFL MarMac School Board met Aug. 10, taking a final opportunity to answer questions about the district’s Return to Learn plan before school starts on Monday, Aug. 24.

MFL MarMac intends to begin the year with on-site learning for all students who are able to attend in-person, while also incorporating a hybrid component. That includes four days per week of on-site instruction on Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday, then continuous learning, where students learn from home, on Wednesdays. This will last through at least the month of September.

Central students head back to school next week

In less than a week, Central students will head back to school, where things will be quite different than they were when the building was abruptly closed in mid-March to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Face coverings will be required on buses and expected in buildings, especially in classes where social distancing is difficult. Stairwell traffic will be one-direction; lunch will be served to elementary students by class, not grade; and before-school gatherings in the foyer area will be discouraged.

Osborne expands disc golf course

The “front nine” of the disc golf course was put in two years ago, through the hunter education course prairie area. The new “back nine” picks up where the first section leaves off, wandering through the woods north of Osborne Pond.

The course was spearheaded by Clayton County Conservation Resource Manager/Naturalist Kenny Slocum, who discovered the idea in an Osborne master plan from 2001.

Marquette takes steps to deal with dog issues

The city of Marquette took steps at its Aug. 11 meeting to deal with an increasing number of dog issues in the community—whether threatening behavior toward humans or other pets, or running at large without a leash.

“We’re trying to eliminate dog issues and make dog owners aware that, if their dogs get out, there will be repercussions,” said mayor Steve Weipert.

The council approved first readings of two different ordinance amendments, one regarding animal protection and control and another about a dangerous or vicious animal.

Ivon was born May 29, 1923, in rural Clayton Center, to Ernst and Alma (Heuer) Ihlenfeldt. He lived all his life in the Clayton County area and attended rural Wagner Township grade school and graduated from Farmersburg High School. He was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg.

Iconic White Springs Supper Club reopened to the public for the first time in 15 years in June. Giving the McGregor restaurant a new lease on life is Jennifer Yager—great granddaughter of White Springs’ long-time owner Ethel Mann—and her husband Robert. The couple is joined in the venture by their friends, Brandon and Emily Schaefer.

Now two months in, they’re all still trying to catch their breath.

“We thought it would be busy,” confided Robert, “but we didn’t expect this support.”

In “God’s Country” is where Joleen Jansen and her family have resided for the better part of two decades, out of a love for the rural “hill country,” the river that runs through it and an Elkader community where friendships flourish and open-arms support is never far behind.

“We are very fortunate to be in the community,” Joleen said.

Such fortune has become vital as the COVID-19 pandemic continues marching through cities, suburbs and rural areas that thought they were immune.

A new digital map prepared by Clayton County Conservation highlights gravel bike routes in the county—capitalizing on a growing trend among outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

“It’s this burgeoning thing throughout Iowa, this gravel biking. We have more roads per capita than any other state, so we’ve got a lot of resources there and now there are bikes developed to be specific to gravel,” said Kenny Slocum, resource manager/naturalist with Clayton County Conservation, who worked on the project with director Jenna Pollock.
