Bee closing chapter at Murphy Helwig Library

Christine Bee has been a familiar face at Monona’s Murphy Helwig Library since 1993, when she took over as the children’s librarian.

“I’d been a library user my whole life, and I had always attended programs here with my children,” Bee said. “It just felt like home away from home.”

In 1997, Bee became the library’s director, a role through which she oversaw the library’s expansion, as well as countless technological advances. But, like all good stories, this one, too, must come to an end, as Bee enters the retirement chapter of her life at the beginning of April.

Looking back, Bee said she’s enjoyed embracing all the technological changes.

MFL MarMac seniors receive all-state nominations for individual speech

Anjela Waterman, Micah Decker and Hope McGlaughlin couldn’t ask for a better way to cap off their high school speech careers. After earning straight ones at the state individual speech contest at Starmont on March 10, the three MFL MarMac seniors have now received all-state nominations.

They’ll perform at the Iowa High School Speech Association All-State Speech Festival on Monday, March 26, on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

30th rendition of The Living Last Supper to be performed this weekend

Monona’s Living Faith United Methodist Church will present its 30th rendition of “The Living Last Supper” this weekend, bringing to life the iconic Leonardo da Vinci mural painting that depicts the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles before his crucifixion.

The tradition was sparked by the church’s pastor at the time, Gary Dobbins, who’d seen it performed at a previous church.

“He thought it would be a good thing, and talked a bunch of guys into doing it,” recalled Ric Benzing, who’s the only original cast member still participating. He’s played Jesus since 1992.

Alpine expanding fiber-optic Fusion Network to Marquette, Pleasant Ridge area

After bringing fiber to McGregor (shown here) last year, Alpine Communications is now expanding its fiber-optic Fusion Network to the community of Marquette and the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood.

Alpine Communications is making a major investment by expanding their 100 percent fiber-optic Fusion Network to the community of Marquette and the Pleasant Ridge Road neighborhood this year. The state-of-the-art Fusion Network will provide a fiber optic connection to all businesses and households within the city limits of Marquette and to customers in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood.

This marks Alpine’s first major project to extend Fusion fiber-optics into its rural territory. The high demand for ultra-fast broadband services along with a digital television alternative is driving this investment.

SODA, PPD curricular presentations highlight school board meeting

Members of MFL MarMac High School’s SODA (Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol) group spoke at the March 12 school board meeting, sharing details about their Feb. 21 visit to the state capitol for “Day on the Hill.”

In Des Moines, students met with legislators Kristi Hager and Michael Bergan, discussing substance abuse issues in area communities. The students’ visit was sponsored by the 5C Coalition, which works to raise awareness about and combat substance abuse in Clayton County.

Marquette Council considers ordinance change for railroad building project

At its March 13 regular meeting, the Marquette Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would change the zoning classification for a portion of current Canadian Pacific Railroad property from A1 - limited agricultural to C1 - highway commercial. The change was recommended by the city’s planning and zoning commission, as not to create spot zoning in the area, which is located south of the railroad tracks and north of Bloody Run, not far from the Wetlands Centre.

“The railroad has shown interest in putting a building up on their own property,” said city clerk Bonnie Basemann, addressing why the change is needed. Permits for the project are still pending, she noted.

Ken White

Ken White, 74, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died Friday, March 16, at his home.

Ken was born on Nov. 19, 1943 in Prairie du Chien the son of Don and Lucile (Haville) White. He graduated from Prairie High school and also from Madison Business College. He lived in Prairie du Chien until the early 1960s, moving to Madison, Wis., for school.

Gaylord Delano Oelke

Gaylord Delano Oelke, 79, of Monona passed from this life March 11, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor.

Gaylord was born May 28, 1938, to Gaylord C. and Iva (Palas) Oelke at Farmersburg. He was baptized June 19, 1938, at St. John’s Lutheran, Farmersburg; confirmed May 13, 1951, at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Monona. Gaylord graduated from Monona High School in 1955 and later attended Iowa State University. On April 4, 1959, he was united in marriage to Judith Grove.

Three from Iowa arrested in connection to burglary investigations

On March 2, after an extensive investigation, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Monona Police Department, executed two separate search warrants in Luana and Monona relating to several burglary investigations. According to a release from the sheriff’s office, during both warrants, deputies seized numerous tools, trailers and other items exceeding $10,000.

As a result of this investigation, John Kottman, 41, of Luana; Jennifer Trappe, 40, of Luana; and Marty Bissell, 57, of Monona, were all arrested.
