Help build McGregor’s new hiking trail

Swing some tools and leave a legacy. On Saturday, April 7, the public is invited to help build a new hiking trail through the forest between Center Street and Cemetery Road, in the city of McGregor. 

Interested persons should meet at the top of the hill on Center Street, just south of Eagle Drive, at 10 a.m. The work day will run until 3 p.m. 

The area is owned by the city, and the idea of developing a trail there has grown in the past few years, said Duane Boelman, McGregor’s deputy clerk and economic development lead, who organized several meetings late last year to discuss the proposed trail.

Grant will bolster after school activities

MFL MarMac has received a $10,000 grant through HAWC (Howard, Allamakee, Winneshiek, Clayton) Partnerships for Children, which will bolster activities offered to students outside the regular school day.

One of the programs is an after school art club. Offered at both the high school and the McGregor Center, the club allows students to spend time with their friends, while being creative and having fun. Art teacher Natalie Heiring and school nurse Jennelle Schroeder lead several sessions a month at the middle school, while art teacher Michelle Meyer handles duties at the high school.

Walz Energy faces $10,000 penalty for violations

Walz Energy is facing a $10,000 penalty from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for three separate violations that have occurred during construction of the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation near Monona.

Walz Energy is facing a $10,000 penalty from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for three separate violations that have occurred during construction of the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation near Monona.

In a letter addressed to Walz Energy’s lawyer, Eldon McAfee, Iowa DNR Attorney Carrie Schoenebaum noted that Walz Energy had “engaged in an illegal discharge to a water of the state, violated its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and its wastewater construction permit. These are violations the DNR takes very seriously.”

Hay Days to include tractor pull this year

At its March 19 regular meeting, the Monona Council approved the closure of Egbert Street on Saturday, June 9, for a tractor pull, a new event at this year’s Hay Days celebration.

“We wanted something additional for Hay Days to create more traffic and bring extra people in,” said Jim Moritz, from FreedomBank, who discussed the idea with the council.

Moritz said several locations were considered for the tractor pull, but Egbert Street, in front of the community center, would work best due to its length and proximity to other Hay Days activities.

Crisis in EMS: Fewer EMTs, tight budgets leave volunteer services searching for solutions

Life can change in an instant—an elderly parent falls at home, a wife or husband suffers a heart attack or stroke, a child is involved in a car accident. But what if, when someone calls 911, no ambulance arrives to assist them?

Unfortunately, that’s become a reality for many people across rural Iowa, as volunteer emergency medical services (EMS) struggle with tight budgets and a shrinking pool of EMTs.

Kip Ladage, Bremer County Emergency Management Coordinator, addressed this “crisis in EMS” earlier this month, during a program attended by EMS providers and community leaders from Clayton and surrounding counties.
