A ‘sweep’ beginning to the season

In game one of the doubleheader against Clayton Ridge, Lauren Haberichter tossed five innings, allowing seven hits and striking out nine batters.

The MFL MarMac softball team swept Upper Iowa Conference foe Clayton Ridge in a doubleheader June 17, to start the season 2-0.

The first game was a 22-4 rout, book-ended by seven Bulldog runs in the first inning and 12 in the fifth. In addition to 11 hits, MFL MarMac players walked 14 times in the game and were hit by four pitches.

War Eagles looking for first win

June 16 at MFL MarMac, Brandon Thiese had a big hit that tied the game 5-5.

Caleb Helle eyed the MFL MarMac defense as he dashed home during the June 16 game in Monona. He scored twice in the 9-5 loss.

The Clayton Ridge/Central (CR/C) War Eagles have started the season 0-4, dropping a doubleheader to North Fayette Valley and games to MFL MarMac and South Winneshiek last week. 

The first game of the doubleheader against North Fayette Valley on June 15 looked promising, as CR/C took a 5-2 lead into the fourth inning. But then the War Eagles were bombarded with a four-run fourth inning and a five-run fifth inning by the TigerHawks, who were gifted 13 walks by War Eagle pitchers. The War Eagles had also committed six errors by the time the TigerHawks added another run in the seventh. The final score was 12-5.

The Central Warriors softball season started quite inauspiciously last week, before the team rallied to finish with a record of 3-3. 

It all began with a doubleheader on June 15 that included a thwarted late inning rally and a late game loss against the Kee Hawks.

Building connections to the community through art

It was a thousand-mile transition from North Carolina to Clayton County, the place where Jillian Webb Herrmann’s husband, Zach, has roots, as his parents and grandparents were all born and raised here. The adventure brought them, but it was the community that kept them here. It’s a community that has been lauded for its serene ability to welcome the transitioning traveler or the returning native. 

So, it was with no great surprise that Jillian, art enthusiast, photographer, painter and Tar Heel, with a degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, found meeting people and gaining the support of the community rather easy.

Elkader Fitness Center remodels, expands

The Elkader Fitness Center underwent a recent remodel and expansion, adding bathrooms, showers, new flooring, insulation, windows, air conditioning, emergency exits and a ceiling, among other things. It was in 2008, in the aftermath of the Turkey River flood that devastated downtown, when local community members armed with a vision and a mind for health and fitness were inspired to start the Elkader Fitness Center. 

Community members like Amy Holst and Julie Kane purchased equipment from the previous fitness center, which was a casualty of the flood. Joleen Jansen established a non-profit venture with other Elkader locals, and a slew of volunteers and businesses contributed time, talent and money and turned the fitness center from a vision into a reality.

A new program established by the city of McGregor will provide economic development grants to local businesses for the redevelopment and improvement of buildings within the community.

The Business Enhancement Grant Program, which has been in the works for several years, resembles a state Main Street program that helps with building façade improvements, explained Duane Boelman, McGregor’s deputy city clerk and economic development lead.

“We always wanted to do it, but our downtown is in a floodplain, so it’s not eligible,” he said. “Now, we can use these funds to do the same thing.”

Sandhill crane family calling Driftless Area Wetlands Centre home

A family of sandhill cranes has taken up residence near the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre in Marquette, representing the first nesting pair the facility has ever had. One of the two colts is pictured feeding with a parent at the wetland. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

The sandhill cranes favor the Wetlands Centre’s nature playground areas. The property’s mixture of wetland and grassland makes it a “really good place for them,” said Wetlands Centre Director Alicia Mullarkey.

The cranes are recognizable for their long legs and necks, gray and tan bodies and bright red crowns.

A family of sandhill cranes has taken up residence near the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre in Marquette, representing the first nesting pair the facility has ever had.

Once common dwellers in Iowa wetlands, sandhill crane populations waned in the late 1800s due to over-hunting and loss of habitat. The first breeding pair returned to the state in 1992, and, today, more than 20 Iowa counties have documented nesting sites.

“The adults have been here since spring, around April,” said Wetlands Centre Director Alicia Mullarkey, avidly watching the cranes through a spotting scope set up outside the nature facility.

McGregor’s Sixth Street Bridge Project is moving ahead

The McGregor Council, at its June 17 meeting, approved the plans, specifications, opinion of cost and form of contract for the upcoming Sixth Street Bridge Project.

Tim Cutsforth, senior project manager with HR Green, said work will include taking out the bridge, which crosses the city’s storm sewer, and replacing it with a box culvert.

“We’ll also be replacing sanitary sewer for the length of the block, and the length of the street will be repaved as well,” he told the council.

Monona OKs three permanent campsites at Gateway Park

The Monona City Council gave the go-ahead, at its June 15 meeting, to establish several permanent campsites at Gateway Park.

Robin Jones, who has stayed at the park’s recently-updated sites with her husband, made the request.

“It’s nice out there,” she told the council. “If there are campers there, others tend to come. I’m not saying make them all permanent, but have a few. You put all that work and money into doing that, so it may bring people in.”

Currently, campers cannot stay at the park for longer than two weeks at a time.

Ruthann Daniels

Ruthann Daniels, 78, of McGregor and Panama City, Fla., went home to her heavenly father on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., after a long and very courageous battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 3, 1942, to Alfred and Ljudmila (Butchar) Scheck in Sheboygan, Wis. 

Ruthann was united in marriage with James Daniels in 1960. Two sons were born to this union. Ruthann worked as an office manager for American Excelsior Co., before retiring.
