Summer vacations offer the perfect opportunity to get away from the daily grind and make memories with family and friends. However, if you’ve only got a short amount of time, don’t relish waiting in long lines at the airport or are simply trying to save money, McGregor and Marquette provide plenty of options for a staycation—a vacation spent at home, visiting local attractions.

It’s also a chance to discover (or re-discover) all the area has to offer.

Kids will have access to free meals with MFL MarMac’s Summer Feeding Program

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

Area kids 18 and under will have access to free lunches this summer through MFL MarMac’s participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be offered Monday through Friday, beginning Tuesday, May 31, in Monona, Farmersburg, Luana, Marquette and McGregor.

The program will be a helpful resource, said Summer Feeding Program director Brandi Crozier, as many families in the district face food insecurity issues.

“Families will benefit to have access to daily meals because of parents working or to offset the financial burden of kids being home for the summer,” she said.

The McGregor Council unanimously approved of the idea at its May 18 meeting, after hearing from resident Sallee Scarff-Muehlbauer, who formulated the plan and will donate the piano. The park board has also given its blessing.

Scarff-Muehlbauer said street pianos can be found in cities across the country, including at least five in Iowa City, three in Mason City and over 10 in Des Moines.

May 15-21 is National EMS Week, a time to honor the commitment of emergency responders. Locally, those emergency responders are volunteers, and at Mar-Mac Rescue Squad, they’re hoping to increase their numbers in order to sustain the service.

Founded in 1968, Mar-Mac Rescue Squad is the oldest ambulance service in Clayton County, said EMT Mike Gilman. Seventeen volunteers currently make up its roster. They respond to an average of 15 to 20 calls each month (162 last year), and are rarely unable to field a crew.
