Cheri Leachman, a Vietnam War-era veteran and member of the McGregor American Legion Post 267, was the speaker at this year’s Memorial Day program at McGregor’s Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Over the past few months, said Leachman, she’s been part of the committee that’s worked to bring the Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to the Clayton County Fairgrounds in National June 30 through July 5.

When the idea of bringing the Moving Wall to Clayton County was first posed, Leachman admitted she was skeptical.

Since finishing his high school baseball career with MFL MarMac three years ago, Brandon Burke has been itching to return to the district as a coach, to continue accomplishing some of the goals he had as a player.

“This job has been a life-long dream of mine. Since I was a young kid, I have wanted to coach baseball at MFL MarMac,” said Burke, who’s now entering his first season as head coach. “My long-term goals include conference championships and state tournament appearances.”

Area kids 18 and under will have access to free lunches this summer through MFL MarMac’s participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be offered Monday through Friday, beginning Tuesday, May 31, in Monona, Farmersburg, Luana, Marquette and McGregor.

The program will be a helpful resource, said Summer Feeding Program director Brandi Crozier, as many families in the district face food insecurity issues.

“Families will benefit to have access to daily meals because of parents working or to offset the financial burden of kids being home for the summer,” she said.

A street piano will soon take up residence in McGregor’s Triangle Park, encouraging musicians passing by to share their talents with the community.

The McGregor Council unanimously approved of the idea at its May 18 meeting, after hearing from resident Sallee Scarff-Muehlbauer, who formulated the plan and will donate the piano. The park board has also given its blessing.

Scarff-Muehlbauer said street pianos can be found in cities across the country, including at least five in Iowa City, three in Mason City and over 10 in Des Moines.
