The Bulldogs started the week July 6, at Kee, winning game one 6-5. The team held just a narrow 5-4 edge over the Hawks going into the top of the seventh, but pushed one run across to make it 6-4. Kee tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning, but failed to add more.

The Clayton Ridge/Central (CR/C) War Eagles wrapped up their regular season last week with an overall record of 4-14.

The final week before the playoffs started on July 6, with a doubleheader against the MFL Mar-Mac Bulldogs. In game one, the War Eagles were winning 2-1 heading into the sixth inning when the Bulldog bats exploded for five runs, putting the game out of reach. The War Eagles eventually lost the game 9-4.

While CR/C actually totaled more hits than the Bulldogs, it was the amount of walks (six), hit batters (two) and stolen bases allowed (five) that were the team’s undoing.

The Central Warriors softball team had another tough week, losing the final four games of the regular season to end with an overall record of 3-13.

It all started with a doubleheader on July 6, against the conference-leading Turkey Valley Trojans, who won game one 12-2.

Warrior pitcher Chelsia Larson continued her valiant effort as the team’s main pitcher, but could not overcome the onslaught of the Trojan bats.

Freshman Delaney Scherf performed well offensively for Central, amassing two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.

Maureen K. Scott-Bading

Maureen Bading passed away peacefully at home after a long illness and went to be with our Lord.  On that day, we had a flock of her hummingbirds and were blessed with heaven’s kisses. We had 47 butterflies that landed on everyone standing on the porch. They would allow you to hold them and wouldn’t fly away.

Maureen attended Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. She had many friends but developed a strong friendship with Tom Bading, for they were both free spirits. They were married on Feb. 23, 1980. Together they were not just the best of friends, but also soulmates, and they found true love in one another.

Marquette seeks input on senior housing feasibility study

The city of Marquette is accepting public comments on a recently-completed senior housing feasibility study. Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission helped develop the study, which weighs the need for senior housing in the area and examines two potential sites in the community. One site is located on Pleasant Drive, between Gencor and the Mar-Mac Police Department/Marquette City Shop.

The second proposed site is in downtown Marquette, between North and Edgar streets, near the Depot Museum and Information Center.

Marquette has considered developing senior housing for quite some time, said city clerk Bonnie Basemann.

“We think it would be a good addition to the city, and it’s the next step in our comprehensive plan,” she stated.

Elkader plans Inside/Outside Sale-a-bration July 10

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

In what’s sure to be a boost to the local economy, Elkader’s Inside/Outside Sale-a-bration takes over the town Friday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it could net participants some of the $500 in Elkader chamber dollars being given away throughout the day.

If some of this sounds familiar, it should. Sale-a-bration is not a new event, but has been rebranded due, in large part, to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions, unpredictable weather and the decision of the merchants.

Zanetta Hoehle, a jewelry-maker from Solon, led two workshops at G’s Closet and Gallery, Elkader. The shop also hosted a trunk showing of her work. Zanetta was scheduled to participate in Art in the Park, which organizers earlier canceled amid coronavirus concerns. The workshops gave her a chance to revisit the town that helped kick-start her art fair presence.
