Monona meal site offers local seniors food and fellowship

Local seniors are welcome to stop by Monona’s meal site every Tuesday and Thursday for a warm, healthy meal and fellowship with other community members. Lunch is always served at 11:30 a.m., at the community center, 104 S. Egbert St.

Attendance generally ranges from four to 10 people, and coordinator Marilyn Baade would like to see that number grow. When she started volunteering at the site in 2004, around 24 people came regularly. It was higher yet in the decades before.

Councils, school board will have new faces

Several local city councils, as well as the MFL MarMac School Board, will have some new faces in the coming year, based on unofficial results from the Nov. 5 city/school election.

Retired teacher Roberta Hass will take one of three open seats on the school board, after receiving a combined 406 votes from district residents in Clayton and Allamakee counties. Incumbents Tonya Meyer and Collin Stubbs earned 360 and 347 votes, respectively, to take the two other seats. Sharon Greener, who was also an incumbent, picked up 335 votes. Hass, Meyer and Stubbs will all serve four-year terms on the board.

Robert Cardin

Robert Lee (Bob) Cardin, 82, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at his home in Kerrville, Texas, with his family at his bedside. He was born in a house in Marquette, to parents Miles and Harriett Cardin on June 21, 1937. He married the love of his life, Judith Anne Risdon, on June 21, 1958, in Independence.

Bob went to school at Mar-Mac in McGregor. He started working at the age of 14 on his uncle’s farm, and, at age 16, began working at the Strand Theater running the movie projector to earn money for basketball shoes. He also worked at Hipps Auto Garage in Prairie du Chien, Wis., until he graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1955.

From one commander to another

As commander, one of Jakob’s goals has been to make improvements at the Legion Hall on Ann Street. This year, Ryan Bacon helped install new siding on the building, while Pat’s Electric completed outside electrical work and Gencor made new signs for the exterior.

Dennis Regal joined the Army in 1956, while just a junior in high school, serving with the National Guard unit in Prairie du Chien, Wis., that was then a medical company.

“My brother was in the Korean War and he had a friend who talked me into joining the unit over there,” Dennis recalled. His first position was as a litter bearer. He retired with the rank of chief warrant officer four nearly 40 years later, in 1995, after stints in Desert Storm and Panama.

Musical will bring ‘Peanuts’ comic strip to life

The musical will bring Charles M. Schulz’s iconic “Peanuts” comic strip to life. All the well-known characters, including Snoopy (Sydney Moser), Sally (Rose Grau) and Woodstock (Jonah Wille), will be featured.

Good grief! Don’t miss the opportunity to see Charles M. Schulz’s iconic “Peanuts” comic strip come to life this weekend during the MFL MarMac musical, which offers a fresh take on the 1967 classic “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

The cast will present three performances in the high school auditorium, in Monona—at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, then again at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. There is no Friday night show this year, so as not to conflict with the MFL MarMac football playoff game.

Family claims Walz Energy partners lied about project’s financing

Members of the Walz family are suing their Walz Energy partners, claiming they lied about having financing for the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation under construction outside Monona.

The lawsuit filed by Michael, Dean and Jared Walz accuses Feeder Creek Group and its managing members, Heath Kellogg and Jon Haman, of theft, misrepresentation and breach of contract.

McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce holds annual awards dinner

The McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards dinner Nov. 4, at Backwoods Bar and Grill, in McGregor. The evening included updates from the chamber’s executive director, Ashley Kishman, as well as chamber board president Audrey Posten, editor of the North Iowa Times, and vice president Katie Ruff, owner of By the Spoonful.

Several individuals and chamber members were also recognized for their work in the community. Terry Sharp, through his work at the Marquette Depot Museum and Information Center, received the Lena D. Myers award for conserving the historical heritage of the communities of Marquette and McGregor.

Adeline Hammel

Adeline Maxine Hammel, 93, of McGregor, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at Great River Care Center, McGregor. Adeline Maxine was born Jan. 22, 1926, to George and Mildred (Lamphere) Ingles at home in Lodomillo Township, Littleport. She attended country school in Mays Prairie in Waterville.

In her younger years, Adeline worked as a waitress at Indian Isle for many years. Adeline also worked at 3M in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She loved to travel, read and play cards.

The first district title in school history, the first winning season since 1992, and the only 9-0 undefeated regular season in school history—to say it’s been a historic year for the MFL MarMac football program is an understatement. But when the postseason starts this Friday, the players want to make one thing clear: they’re not done yet.

“We are doing something we haven’t done in a long time, but we’re taking it as if we’re not satisfied,” said junior Max Havlicek, who was one of 11 players that recently sat down to reflect on the team’s success. “We’re not looking back at the season yet. We still have so much more to prove.”
