Middle school play will humorously depict internet distractions

The MFL MarMac Middle School Drama Department will present the play “The Internet is Distract—Oh Look, a Kitten!” on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14. “The Internet is Distract—Oh Look, a Kitten” centers around Taylor (right), played by Mindy Keehner, who’s trying to finish a book report on “The Great Gatsby” but keeps getting distracted by websites and apps. It’s a scenario many people have encountered: “You go online for one thing,” said Mindy Keehner, “then you end up doing five other things.”

The premise is one Keehner and other MFL MarMac middle school students will humorously showcase this weekend through the play “The Internet is Distract—Oh Look, a Kitten!” Performances will be held at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium in Monona on both Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14. 

Director Michelle Hontz said she discovered the play through her co-director, Karla Hanson, whose son had seen it and thought it was funny.

Dinner theater will share tragic story of 1896 Flood of North McGregor

This photo, taken from the bench, reveals the devastation in North McGregor (now Marquette) following the 1896 flood. A dinner theater performance at the Marquette Community Center on Friday, March 27, will share the tragic history of the flood, which killed 28 people.

The 1896 flood was one of the area’s most devastating natural disasters. Five inches of rain fell in one hour in late May, sending a 20-foot-high wall of water down the Bloody Run valley from Beulah (which was destroyed) into North McGregor, washing away bridges, railroad tracks and homes.

March 27 event is part of Marquette 100th anniversary celebration

A March 27 dinner theater performance at the Marquette Community Center will share the tragic history of the 1896 Flood of North McGregor. A cast of eight members—decked out in period costume—will tell the story, while the audience enjoys a prime rib meal with all the fixings provided by the Marquette Cafe.

The event, which starts at 6 p.m., kicks off a two-day celebration recognizing the city of Marquette’s 100th anniversary (name change from North McGregor to Marquette).

Fundraising underway to pave original portions of Butterfly Trail

The Monona City Council would like to see more fundraising underway before contributing to efforts to pave the two original sections of Monona’s Butterfly Trail.

Council members made the decision March 2, after considering a request from Butterfly Garden and Trail Committee volunteer Jim Langhus to purchase a piece of equipment called a TRAILrider, which could be pulled behind a truck or other vehicle to pave the trail.

Langhus hoped the city would be willing to foot the $16,000 cost for the TRAILrider, leaving it up to the committee to seek donations to pave the 5,100-foot stretch with concrete.

Five lady Bulldogs earn all-conference recognition

Five players from the Upper Iowa Conference champion MFL MarMac girls basketball team have earned all-conference recognition. Bailey Winter and Rachel Davis were each named to the first team and Jordan Schubert to the second team, while RoseMary McGeough and Riley Moreland picked up honorable mention nods.

Winter, a senior, was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer this season, with 14.3 points per game. She had a 46.4 field goal percentage and was the team’s top three-point threat, sinking 26 shots from behind the arc over 23 games. Among MFL MarMac players, Winter was tops with 61 assists, 89 steals and 43 blocks. She was also second with 5.3 rebounds per game.

Four MFL MarMac players make all-conference basketball team

Four members of the MFL MarMac boys basketball team that won a share of the Upper Iowa Conference title have received all-conference honors. Seniors Cedrick Drahn and Tyler Kurth were first team picks, while senior Gavin Hertrampf and junior Cayden Ball were honorable mention selections.

Drahn was the Bulldogs’ scoring leader, averaging 15.4 points over 22 games. He drained a team-high 46 shots from behind the arc and was also tops in assists (130) and steals (40). Drahn’s six rebounds per game put him second among MFL MarMac players.

Kurth scored 12.6 points per game—second on the team—and his 60.6 field goal percentage over 22 games was also one of the top marks. He led all Bulldogs with 8.5 rebounds per game and 19 total blocks.

Reva Ellen Radloff, 91, died Monday, March 2, 2020, at St. Mary Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Reva was born Oct. 27, 1928, to Ross and Hazel (Blackwell) Dull in McGregor. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. Reva graduated from McGregor High School.

Dr. Donald Frost Strutt

Dr. Donald Frost Strutt, 88, passed away in his home with his family by his side.  He was born in Dodgeville, Wis., on Aug. 16,1931. The family home was in Ridgeway until after his father’s death, when Donald was 10 years old. They then moved to Dodgeville, where he felt a responsibility to his mother, younger sister and brother and went to work early in life. He graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1949.  Don married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Joanne Lucille Reese, on March 19, 1951. They worked and loved their way to his life’s finish line during their 69 years of marriage.

Penny Pfeiffer

Penny Sue Pfeiffer, 57, of Marquette, died Monday, March 2, 2020, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Penny was born Feb. 4, 1963, to Raymond and Delva (Clausman) Huntbach in Waterloo. She graduated from Central High School in Waterloo and attended one year of college at North Western Missouri State in Maryville, Mo.

Penny was united in marriage with Kent Pfeiffer on April 28, 1990, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor. Two sons were born to this union. Penny was a sergeant at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Facility since 2001. Previously she was the owner and operator of Black Hawk Dry Cleaners for nine years. She loved going to the Tropics with her husband, Kent, and spending time on the Mississippi River, boating and water skiing. Penny’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Henry "Pete" Kautman

Dr. Henry Joseph “Pete” Kautman, Jr., 72, of McGregor, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Henry Joseph was born Feb. 27, 1947, to Henry J. and Helen M. (Cowell) in McGregor. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School and attended eight years of college at Iowa State University, graduating in 1972 to become a doctor of veterinary medicine.

Pete worked as an inspector for the USDA for many years. He loved traveling and the Mississippi River, which he lived by. Pete enjoyed investments and spending time with Mary and his dog, Dusty, and cat, Sergeant Henry.

Pete is survived by his loving companion, Mary Greener of McGregor; three siblings, Thomas Kautman of McGregor, Kathryn Kautman of New Hope, Minn., and Kris Kautman of Mason City; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

“McGregor’s always been home.”

Even as a kid, growing up outside the community, Janet Hallberg said she’d sometimes purposely miss the bus to her house, just so she could walk around town with her friends after school.  When her family moved into McGregor her freshman year of high school, Janet loved it.
