MFL MarMac volleyball has 1-1 week

Lakota Morrissey earned nine assists in the Sept. 29 victory over Central.

Miranda Lang completed seven of eight serves, including two aces, against Central.

The MFL MarMac volleyball team went 1-1 last week, defeating Central and dropping a game to Turkey Valley.

The Bulldogs faced Central on Sept. 29, in Monona, sweeping the match 3-0. The first set ended 25-15, but the second took extra points, 28-26. The final set was also close, as MFL MarMac rallied from behind to beat the Warriors 26-24.

Warrior cross country team performs well against tough competition

The Central cross-country team took part in the Jesup Invitational this past week, performing well against what assistant coach Martha Bauder said was “extremely tough competition.” 

The tough competition began in the varsity girls’ race, where stalwarts Hannah Asche finished 20th and Delaney Scherf came in 40th, out of 131 total runners. Asche won a medal, and both girls ran season best times. 

But it wasn’t enough to overcome the assembled field of talent. As a result, the team finished 13th out of 20 teams with a score of 320. Jesup, the winners of the team competition, scored 110 points.

Virginia Sparrgrove

Virginia Sparrgrove, 93, of Strawberry Point, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. She was born on Dec. 18, 1926, in Postville, the daughter of Dr. Amos and Myrtle (Elder) Sherbon. Virginia attended school in Coggon and Center Point and was a graduate of Central City High School. She attended the University of Iowa for a year and then AIB in Des Moines. During WWII, Virginia worked in Des Moines making fuses for bombs.

Phyllis Ruth Freitag, 85, of Elkader, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center after having a stroke. She was born Jan. 26, 1935, in rural Elkport, to LeRoy and Beatrice Jennie (Mangold) Hansel.

In a celebration befitting the times, Central’s Homecoming Hall of Famer, Michael Osterloh, delivered a message of faith, friends and family live via Zoom from Florida to the student body on Sept. 25, as part of the Homecoming festivities. Osterloh, a graduate of the Class of 1980, was chosen for his vast knowledge, experience and involvement with modern rocket technology and being at the forefront of space travel-related science.

Zach Herrmann has spent most of his life in North Carolina, but his Iowa roots run deep. His parents and grandparents were all born and raised in Clayton County. In 2013, the attorney and his wife, Jillian, moved to the area, settling on the family farm.

“When I first moved here, I was in the Neylan Law Office, just down the street,” he said, speaking from his office in downtown Elkader. “[Kathleen Neylan] was really good to me and gave me a lot of opportunities. I learned a lot.”

Art in the Alley event brings culture and ‘placemaking’ to Elkader

Check out Elkader’s “Art in the Alley” on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is meant to build off Elkader’s bustling art culture and attractions. It will stretch from the post office down toward the opera house, running through the main alley in downtown, which stretches along the backside of Main Street.

That’s how Main Street Elkader (MSE) Executive Director Kate Lower talked about the upcoming Art in the Alley event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. 

On the heels of Main Street Elkader being designated an Iowa Cultural and Entertainment District by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the event—the first of its kind—is meant to build off Elkader’s bustling art culture and attractions. Fall has arrived, and Marquette and McGregor are preparing for a busy weekend of activities. 

The annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival will take place at McGregor’s Triangle Park on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4. Around 50 vendors are expected this year, with most setting up outside, and a limited number—physically distanced—inside the nearby Backwoods Event Center. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Marquette’s Flea Market Under the Bridge will also return Oct. 3-4, offering a unique selection of arts, crafts and collectibles from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.

Central football team wins homecoming game

Elliot Kelly took over as quarterback against West Central. He threw for 26 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown.

In a week that took on extra significance for the Central Warriors football team because of homecoming, they did not disappoint, delivering a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback victory to defeat the West Central Blue Devils 56-48. It was the team’s first win of the season and first win since Sept. 14, 2018. 

“It feels really good to get that first win. The kids were really excited and I know that my coaching staff and myself were very excited as well. I think homecoming added a little bit more to it, but I try to treat every game the same,” coach Joe Koehn said after the game.

In a spectacular week of sports for Central, the varsity volleyball team won two out of three matches, defeating Kee and South Winneshiek to bring their season record to 3-12 and forge the building blocks that will carry the team forward. 

In the first match against Kee on Sept. 22, the Warriors dominated the Hawks, winning all three sets, 25-16, 25-22, and 25-18. 

Alivia Keppler led the team in assists with 21, while Isabelle Groth and Brandy Beatty combined for 17 of the team’s 28 kills. Overall, on 74 kill attempts, the Warriors converted 28 for an efficiency of .176.
