Learn about YRSF fire tower National Historic Register nomination project

Friends of Yellow River State Forest is exploring the possibility of restoring Iowa’s first and only fire tower and making it accessible to the public. To that end, a volunteer with the Friends group, Vicky Peterson, is working with Jennifer Price of Price Preservation Research, a historic preservation consultant, and the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office to get the fire tower listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dunkerton defeats Central 52-6

The Central football team headed into the Oct. 2 game against the Dunkerton Raiders riding a high from their homecoming victory and coach Joe Koehn’s unwavering loyalty to running the football. The Raider defense was undaunted, stymieing the Warriors’ rush offense, holding it to 70 total yards for a 1.9-yards-per-carry average. The end result was a 52-6 loss, bringing the Warriors’ record to 1-4 on the season.

The Central volleyball team had a tough past week, dropping two matches in straight sets. 

On Sept. 29, the Warriors took on MFL MarMac, losing 25-15, 28-26 and 26-24. While the match was competitive, and the Warriors actually outperformed the Bulldogs in certain statistical categories such as serve efficiency, serve aces and blocks, they could not overcome a disparity in kills and kill errors.

Bulldog runners face strong fields at Jesup, Crestwood

The MFL MarMac cross country team raced in two events last week, including an invitational at Jesup on Sept. 29 and a meet hosted by Crestwood on Oct. 3.

Junior Sydney Moser was back in action at Jesup, leading the lady Bulldogs with an 18th-place finish with a time of 21:17.3. Freshman Clare Grau wasn’t far behind, running the course in 21:27.4 to place 25th. Freshmen Kaylee Walch and Ayla Gerndt were 85th and 87th, respectively, with times of 23:47.5 and 23:47.9, while freshman Ruby Koeller and sophomore Alexis Ross came in at 26:34.6 and 26:56.8 to take the 125th and 126th spots.

Bulldogs beat South Winn, creating three-way tie atop district standings

The Warriors’ star quarterback, Jacob Herold, was sacked twice by the Bulldogs, including this one by freshman Wyatt Powell.

The MFL MarMac defense kept South Winn’s prolific triple option offense largely under wraps. Head coach Dan Anderson attributed a lot of that success to nose guard Josh Reichard.

The MFL MarMac football team defeated rival South Winneshiek 36-22 on Oct. 2. The victory, paired with a win over Postville in the final regular season game this coming Friday, would give the Bulldogs a share of the Class A District 4 title with the Warriors and Wapsie Valley.

“It’s a huge victory,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “We went against a really good football team that was undefeated and ranked top four. I thought we dominated for a lot of that football game.”

Miranda Lang completed seven of eight serves, including two aces, against Central.

The MFL MarMac volleyball team went 1-1 last week, defeating Central and dropping a game to Turkey Valley.

The Bulldogs faced Central on Sept. 29, in Monona, sweeping the match 3-0. The first set ended 25-15, but the second took extra points, 28-26. The final set was also close, as MFL MarMac rallied from behind to beat the Warriors 26-24.

Riley Moreland continued to lead the Bulldog attack, smashing 12 of the team’s 21 kills. She also had a team-high two blocks and was one of the leaders with 10 digs. Fourteen of her 15 serve attempts were successful, including two aces.

Warrior cross country team performs well against tough competition

The Central cross-country team took part in the Jesup Invitational this past week, performing well against what assistant coach Martha Bauder said was “extremely tough competition.” 

The tough competition began in the varsity girls’ race, where stalwarts Hannah Asche finished 20th and Delaney Scherf came in 40th, out of 131 total runners. Asche won a medal, and both girls ran season best times. 

But it wasn’t enough to overcome the assembled field of talent. As a result, the team finished 13th out of 20 teams with a score of 320. Jesup, the winners of the team competition, scored 110 points.

Virginia Sparrgrove

Virginia Sparrgrove, 93, of Strawberry Point, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. She was born on Dec. 18, 1926, in Postville, the daughter of Dr. Amos and Myrtle (Elder) Sherbon. Virginia attended school in Coggon and Center Point and was a graduate of Central City High School. She attended the University of Iowa for a year and then AIB in Des Moines. During WWII, Virginia worked in Des Moines making fuses for bombs.

Phyllis Ruth Freitag, 85, of Elkader, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center after having a stroke. She was born Jan. 26, 1935, in rural Elkport, to LeRoy and Beatrice Jennie (Mangold) Hansel.

Hall of Famer Osterloh offers wisdom

In a celebration befitting the times, Central’s Homecoming Hall of Famer, Michael Osterloh, delivered a message of faith, friends and family live via Zoom from Florida to the student body on Sept. 25, as part of the Homecoming festivities. Osterloh, a graduate of the Class of 1980, was chosen for his vast knowledge, experience and involvement with modern rocket technology and being at the forefront of space travel-related science.
