Nearly 83% of Clayton County registered voters cast ballots in Nov. 3 general election

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

Nearly 83 percent of registered voters in Clayton County cast ballots in the Nov. 3 general election, according to unofficial results released by the Clayton County Auditor’s Office. Of the 9,636 voters, nearly half (4,750) voted absentee, while 4,886 cast their ballots on Election Day.

The turnout was a little higher than anticipated, but not much, said Clayton County Auditor Jennifer Garms.

“The last two presidential elections had approximately 80 percent turnout and 9,200 voters each,” she said.

An ambitious, young entrepreneur resides among us. Ten-year-old Collin Holdsworth is trying to break into the world of newsprint media with a monthly newsletter called The Elkader Gazette

The homeschooled Collin, who arrived from Texas earlier this year when the Holdsworths decided to move closer to family, was excited to “see something new” and to experience shorter summers without the blistering deep south heat. There is also the scenery—the hills, bluffs and Mississippi River—which has been stirring. “Nice, positive” people have also been encouraging.

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

At a Nov. 5 special meeting, the Monona City Council officially approved the annexation of six parcels of real estate adjacent to the city’s southwest boundary, on the south side of Highway 18/52 and west of Falcon Avenue, into the city limits. All necessary paperwork will now head to the Iowa Secretary of State’s office for final confirmation.

Three property owners—representing the six parcels—had requested voluntary annexation. That included Kwik Star, which originally prompted the conversation due to plans to expand at its location just off Highway 18/52.

Despite the restrictions of COVID-19, the Central Drama Department is entering the final phase of preparation for the fall production—a comedy that will be performed in the LoRene Lenth Auditorium of the school on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.

The comedy “Funny Little Thing Called Love” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten is actually a series of five different love stories connected only by the same magical, romantic full moon. This deliriously funny show is all about that four-letter word: “L-O-V-E.” Under a full moon on this unpredictable night of romance, these rollicking tales take you on an around-the-globe journey of unexpected and hilarious twists and turns.

New dates and format changes have not changed the fact that Iowa is home to the largest high school dance team competition in the country. Normally taking place in early December, the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association’s (ISDTA) Iowa High School and College State Dance Team Championship has been moved up to Nov. 17-19. The 45th annual competition will see the team and solo championships combined and increased from two days of dancing to three.

“This spring it became clear many aspects of a typical dance season would need to be reimagined; practice, competition and routine choreography would need to be different,” said ISDTA Executive Director Andrea Dana. “ISDTA is focused on preserving the state experience, while ensuring teams and soloists and ISDTA staff and the association remained safe, and creating opportunity out of the challenges COVID-19 has presented.”

UMGC awards over $387k in grants to area non-profits organizations

Bonnie Pruett (left) and Anne Kruse, with the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts, recently accepted a $3,675 grant from the Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation (UMGC) for The Left Bank Revival remodeling project. The art center was one of over 30 non-profits or Dollars for Scholars schools that received UMGC funding this year. (Submitted photo)

The Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation (UMGC) did not host its annual grant awards ceremony this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, UMGC Executive Director Sindee Gohde said UMGC still granted $380,411.82 this fall to 32 area non-profit organizations and five Dollars for Scholars schools in and around Clayton County. There were also three grants committed this spring, for a grand total of $387,411.82 in grants this year.

Gohde was happy to report these numbers despite the lower revenue received from the Casino Queen Marquette due to its shut down earlier this spring because of COVID-19. Gohde stated this was the year UMGC was supposed to receive the full 3.25 percent of gaming revenue for the first time and had high hopes for a high return. COVID-19 changed those plans.

A tale of two halves: St. Ansgar rallies past Bulldogs in quarterfinal game

Following MFL MarMac’s Class A quarterfinal loss at St. Ansgar on Nov. 6, senior Max Havlicek hoisted the team’s state participant trophy for fans to see. The Bulldogs finished the season 9-2. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Just like he did throughout the season, running back Cullen McShane made Saints defenders miss Friday night. The junior ran the ball 10 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. The total pushed him to 1,477 yards on the season, surpassing the 1,312 by Brad Mohs in 1980 that was the single season school record.

The MFL MarMac football team lost its Nov. 6 Class A quarterfinal game at undefeated St. Ansgar 49-14, closing the book on an unforgettable season.

“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “Who would’ve thought, at the beginning of the season, we’d be sitting here in the quarterfinals—281 schools in the state of Iowa didn’t get the opportunity we had to play in the quarterfinals. That’s pretty special for the guys to make it that far with only one or two guys who were starters last year on offense. To start this game, we had 10 underclassmen starting on defense against a senior-laden team.”

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau has been a lifelong runner. In seventh grade, she joined the middle cross country team, then kept with the sport as she entered high school this fall.

“I enjoy running a lot,” she said. “It takes your mind off things.”

“And,” she added, “you can set goals for yourself.”

When the season started, Grau admitted running in the state cross country meet wasn’t necessarily on her mind.
