New dates and format changes have not changed the fact that Iowa is home to the largest high school dance team competition in the country. Normally taking place in early December, the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association’s (ISDTA) Iowa High School and College State Dance Team Championship has been moved up to Nov. 17-19. The 45th annual competition will see the team and solo championships combined and increased from two days of dancing to three.

“This spring it became clear many aspects of a typical dance season would need to be reimagined; practice, competition and routine choreography would need to be different,” said ISDTA Executive Director Andrea Dana. “ISDTA is focused on preserving the state experience, while ensuring teams and soloists and ISDTA staff and the association remained safe, and creating opportunity out of the challenges COVID-19 has presented.”

UMGC awards over $387k in grants to area non-profits organizations

Bonnie Pruett (left) and Anne Kruse, with the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts, recently accepted a $3,675 grant from the Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation (UMGC) for The Left Bank Revival remodeling project. The art center was one of over 30 non-profits or Dollars for Scholars schools that received UMGC funding this year. (Submitted photo)

The Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation (UMGC) did not host its annual grant awards ceremony this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, UMGC Executive Director Sindee Gohde said UMGC still granted $380,411.82 this fall to 32 area non-profit organizations and five Dollars for Scholars schools in and around Clayton County. There were also three grants committed this spring, for a grand total of $387,411.82 in grants this year.

Gohde was happy to report these numbers despite the lower revenue received from the Casino Queen Marquette due to its shut down earlier this spring because of COVID-19. Gohde stated this was the year UMGC was supposed to receive the full 3.25 percent of gaming revenue for the first time and had high hopes for a high return. COVID-19 changed those plans.

A tale of two halves: St. Ansgar rallies past Bulldogs in quarterfinal game

Following MFL MarMac’s Class A quarterfinal loss at St. Ansgar on Nov. 6, senior Max Havlicek hoisted the team’s state participant trophy for fans to see. The Bulldogs finished the season 9-2. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Just like he did throughout the season, running back Cullen McShane made Saints defenders miss Friday night. The junior ran the ball 10 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. The total pushed him to 1,477 yards on the season, surpassing the 1,312 by Brad Mohs in 1980 that was the single season school record.

The MFL MarMac football team lost its Nov. 6 Class A quarterfinal game at undefeated St. Ansgar 49-14, closing the book on an unforgettable season.

“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “Who would’ve thought, at the beginning of the season, we’d be sitting here in the quarterfinals—281 schools in the state of Iowa didn’t get the opportunity we had to play in the quarterfinals. That’s pretty special for the guys to make it that far with only one or two guys who were starters last year on offense. To start this game, we had 10 underclassmen starting on defense against a senior-laden team.”

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau has been a lifelong runner. In seventh grade, she joined the middle cross country team, then kept with the sport as she entered high school this fall.

“I enjoy running a lot,” she said. “It takes your mind off things.”

“And,” she added, “you can set goals for yourself.”

When the season started, Grau admitted running in the state cross country meet wasn’t necessarily on her mind.

Record increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations in Clayton County

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

Clayton County saw 156 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past week, jumping from 421 on Oct. 26 to 577 by Nov. 2. That total has increased by 226 cases in the past two weeks, pushing the county’s 14-day positivity rate, which measures the percentage of positive tests in that span, to 22.9 percent—sixth worst in the state of Iowa.

The increase prompted the CEOs of Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics (GMHC) and MercyOne Elkader Medical Center, Tim Ahlers and Brooke Kensinger, to release a joint statement on Friday.

MFL MarMac students go ‘gaga’ over new physical education activity

MFL MarMac students of all ages have enjoyed playing gaga ball, a game similar to dodgeball, that’s played in an octagon called a gaga pit. The school purchased the gaga pit, which is portable and can be set up inside or outside, thanks to a $1,715 McElroy Excellence in Education Enrichment Grant. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

“If the ball hits you below the knees, you’re out. That’s the number one rule,” physical education teacher Chet Bachman said of gaga ball. “You have to hit it open-handed, and you can even hit it with two hands, anywhere you want. You just can’t grab it. You can’t stop the ball and guide it, and you can’t kick it either.” Here, third grader Mia Kautman shows how it’s done.

MFL MarMac P.E. teacher Chet Bachman likes gaga ball because it’s fun, gets students physically activity and allows entire classes of any size to participate.

“Ga. Ga. Go!”

MFL MarMac third graders chant the words as physical education teacher Chet Bachman bounces a kickball three times, then lets it loose in a black-walled octagon set up on the stage in the high school gym. The students, spaced around the edge of the structure, jockey for position, hoping for a chance to smack the ball—or avoid being hit by it.

“If the ball hits you below the knees, you’re out. That’s the number one rule,” Bachman said. “You have to hit it open-handed, and you can even hit it with two hands, anywhere you want. You just can’t grab it. You can’t stop the ball and guide it, and you can’t kick it either.”

Another shop and dine event is coming to Elkader. This time, it’s the newly-minted “Get Your Jingle On” that stretches over two-days—Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7—and includes a lighted walking parade that revolves around the Thomas Tree lighting ceremony.

The event, according to Elkader Chamber Coordinator Ann Gibney, came about because the chamber board is “always looking at ideas to get people to come to our great town.” There are a slew of activities taking place Friday evening in an effort to encourage tourism and community involvement.
