Investigation leads to discovery of meth lab

A Jan. 3 investigation in downtown Marquette has led to the discovery of a meth lab.

According to a press release, at approximately 2:19 p.m., the Mar-Mac Police Department responded to a business on First Street, in the city’s corporate limits, for an allegation of domestic abuse.

During the investigation, an officer discovered what appeared to be an active “one-pot” methamphetamine clandestine laboratory. The clandestine laboratory was safely dismantled by specially trained personnel with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

CCED effort will bring EV charging stations to five Clayton County communities this year

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be installed in public spaces in Elkader, Guttenberg, Marquette, McGregor and Strawberry Point this spring, through an effort spearheaded by the Clayton County Energy District. The project aims to reverse the county’s identity as a charging station desert, attracting tourists with electric vehicles to local destinations. Each community will get one of these Blink dual port, level 2 pedestal chargers.

Elkader Council discusses ongoing bridge, Carter Street projects

The Elkader City Council had money on its mind at its Dec. 28 meeting, as ongoing projects and a request from public works added to the financial stress of improving Elkader. 

First, the council received an update on the Keystone Bridge Rehabilitation, a project that currently costs over $295,000—an overall cost that is far higher than initial estimates. There are numerous explanations for why this has occurred.

Justin Birdnow taking over ownership of Monona dealership

Birdnow Chevrolet has been a Monona staple for nearly two decades, since the Birdnow family bought out Huinker’s Chevrolet in 2003. Four years ago, Justin Birdnow moved to Monona with his wife and three daughters in order to work at the dealership full time.

“We knew we needed to do that because we wanted to be a bigger part of the community,” he said. “And we’re very glad to be here. I’ll never forget how open and friendly people have been, from church to the business, just everywhere. People here have always welcomed us.”

Now, Justin is cementing that commitment to the community, and buying the store from his family.

Reinhart's art inspired by nature

“I thought everyone was joking.” 

That’s what freshman Leah Reinhart said when she found out she’d been selected as Central’s Featured Artist of the Month. 

The young artist is often inspired by music, feelings and her surroundings, especially nature. Or just whatever feels right in the moment. 

It’s a creative process that doesn’t necessarily have a plan, but produces soulful results—like the big fish, which is her favorite piece. A time-consuming piece of work, it required innumerable attention to detail during the cutting process because Reinhart wanted to make sure everything was precise. It also taught her a valuable life lesson.

Central board discusses logistics of wrestling meet

The Central Community School Board covered a number of housekeeping items at the last meeting of the calendar year. The meeting was held Dec. 21, with both in-person and Zoom participation.

Following unanimous approval of the consent agenda, there was a presentation by members of the seventh and eighth grade classes on a possible lock-in for March 19 and 20. The event, if approved, will be funded with some of the proceeds from the ongoing can redemption effort coordinated by Central students.

Warriors win matches, but lose duals at Central tournament

At 120 pounds, Daniel Royer (top) pinned Sam Cook from East Buchanan in 1:55.

Nick Deitchler took on Reese Talaska of Waterloo in the 126-pound match, losing by a 6-2 decision.

Despite winning a fair amount of wrestling matches, it was forfeits that sent the Warriors to a 1-4 record at the Central Round Robin Dual Tournament this past weekend. 

Although the team showed great progress and competitive resolve, it started out flat footed against Cascade, losing 66-12. It was the only lopsided match-up for the Warriors, as they lost all four wrestling matches via pin, and only secured 12 points from Cascade forfeits.

Bruce A. 'Wyatt' Richardson

Bruce A. “Wyatt” Richardson, 55, Prairie du Chien, Wis., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020. He was born on Jan. 11, 1965, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., to William and Mary Elgens Ames Richardson. 

On Aug. 23, 1986, Bruce was united in marriage with Teresa Marie Eilers at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Bruce was an avid family man and a great outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a NASCAR enthusiast. Bruce was a member of the Bridgeport Fire Department for 32 years and the Eastman Fire Department for five years. He worked at Gencor Bituma for 30 years as a welder and supervisor. Bruce had excellent work ethics and was always there to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors. Bruce will be sadly missed by family and his best friend, Jim Lessard.

Rosemary T. Engelhardt

Rosemary Teresa Engelhardt, 72, Elkader, died of COVID-19, Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at MercyOne Dubuque. Private graveside services will be held with a public memorial service to be held at a later date.

She was born Jan. 14, 1948, in Independence, to Francis and Clara (DePaepe) Toale.

She graduated from St. John High School, Independence, and later Gates Business College, Waterloo. She worked for a time at the Waterloo Public Library.

Marion E. Moses

Marion Elizabeth Moses, age 84, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma (brain cancer). She was born on Dec. 25, 1936, the daughter of Leander (Tommy) and Anna (Berns) Stroschein.

Marion received her education and graduated from the St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Garnavillo. On Sept. 5, 1957, Marion was united in marriage with Darwin Moses at St. Joseph’s Church in Garnavillo. Together, the couple owned and operated the Kist Bottling Company where Marion was known as the Pop Lady. Marion also worked as a line server at the casino in Marquette.
