MFL MarMac rolls to record-breaking 65-28 win over Maquoketa Valley

Wing back Karter Decker carried the ball five times for the Bulldogs, accumulating 43 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown.

The MFL MarMac football team rolled to a 65-28 victory over visiting Maquoketa Valley in the season opener Aug. 28—a school record for points scored in a game.

“I believed in my guys, believed we were going to win,” acknowledged head coach Dan Anderson. “But if you would’ve said we were going to put 65 points on the board in the first one of the year, I would’ve said, ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to happen.’”

“We didn’t make the mistakes,” he said. “That team we played is a better football team than that. They made some mistakes and we capitalized on them.”

Bulldogs drop first game to Cascade

With 16 digs, libero Lexy Johnson was a strong back row presence for the Bulldogs in the 3-0 loss.

The MFL MarMac volleyball team lost its season-opening game to Cascade, 3-0, on Aug. 25. The first set was the closest of the match, with the Bulldogs falling 25-21. However, haunted by service errors and some strong serving on the Cougars’ part, MFL MarMac dropped the following two sets 25-18 and 25-8, respectively.

Junior Riley Moreland had two kills and two blocks for the Bulldogs, in addition to eight digs. Senior Kayden Gillitzer was also key at the net, with two kills and one block. Senior Lexy Johnson led the team with 16 digs, while Abby Schellhorn and Miranda Lang each picked up eight.

The Bulldogs will look to earn their first win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in a triangular at Turkey Valley.

Warriors fall in season opener

It was a rough start to the Central Warriors’ football season Friday night, as the team lost its home opener against the Kee Hawks, 54-14.

From the start, the Warriors had trouble moving and protecting the ball.

Quarterback Evan Schroeder completed four of 13 passes for 11 yards, while throwing four interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. The rushing attack totaled 38 attempts for 89 yards, an average of 2.8 yards per carry.

Central volleyball starts season at tourney

The Central Warriors volleyball team started the season on Aug. 29, losing all three games at a tournament at Cascade.

In the first game against the Springville Orioles, the Warriors lost in straight sets by the scores of 21-12 and 21-6. The team ended up with a kill efficiency of just 40.9 percent and totaled one block. The Warriors managed two ace serves and a 70 percent serve efficiency, while recording four assists and 12 digs.

Ava Pensel led the way with three assists and Chelsia Larson was responsible for the team’s only block. Maddy Wille totaled four of the team’s 12 digs.

In his second season as head coach of Central’s volleyball program, the 20-year coaching veteran Mike Smith is looking to slow things down, get the team to play more consistently and understand the psychology of the players more, in order to improve relations and maximize potential.

Part of this is spurred by a coaching philosophy that focuses on constantly improving and getting better.

“You may not win them all, but as long as the team keeps getting better, then you are coaching them,” Smith said.

MFL MarMac coaches discuss pandemic’s impact on fall sports

When Iowa high school fall sports seasons kick off this week, opposing teams won’t be the only challenge athletes face this year. They’re also dealing with new health and safety measures implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Preparing for the season was difficult because we didn’t even know if the season would be delayed or cancelled,” said MFL MarMac’s head volleyball coach, Angela Adney. “The girls were given about a week’s notice that the season would be officially beginning, and practice times were adjusted to work around many commitments the girls already had scheduled.”

The MFL MarMac volleyball team is under new leadership this season, with Monona native and MFL MarMac alumna Angela Adney taking over as head coach.

Adney has led volleyball programs at neighboring school districts for the past three years. She said much of her skill set and knowledge stems from playing on a variety of coed volleyball leagues around the area and learning from elite players and coaches from other communities.

“Now I’m excited to be back and to make an impact in my hometown,” she shared.

The MFL MarMac football team is coming off an historic season—one that saw them go 10-1 and claim the first district title in school history. Last year’s squad was senior-dominated, including five all-state players.

“All of them graduated, and we lost some excellent football players, so there are going to be a lot of new faces,” admitted head coach Dan Anderson, but that doesn’t mean anyone should sleep on the Bulldogs.

The MFL MarMac cross country team boasts 23 kids on its roster this season, with plenty of both boys and girls to field full varsity teams. It’s a prospect sixth-year head coach Eric Koenig is excited about.

“Just being able to field a full boys and girls team in itself is an accomplishment for schools our size,” he noted. “The kids are not only running for individual placement, but also a team score—something more than just themselves. These kids are really supportive of each other and define what a team is, and for us coaches, that’s as exciting to see as their improving performance.”

Ten of those team members are freshmen.

In 38 years as a coach at Central, 30 for cross country, Mark Bauder has seen a lot, done a lot and experienced decades of change, but this year will be different—perhaps unlike any other he has ever faced.

It’s not just COVID-19 running alongside the team, invading the tranquility of the run, but also because, for the first time in nearly three decades, the cross country team doesn’t have enough runners for a team score. According to Bauder, that “makes achieving personal best times even harder.”
