This season, Central wrestling has experience and expectations

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

As the winter sports season commences, a familiar name echoes across the coaching landscape at Central, that of Joe Koehn, who led the Warriors football program this past fall in his first stint as head coach. He returns now, not to the gridiron, but to the wrestling mat for his third year as the head coach.

It was a love for wrestling and the experience of wrestling in high school that lured Koehn to the job. This year comes with high expectations for an experienced team and a coach who seems to thrive on competition.

Gabe McGeough and Karter Decker were both third team selections.

Havlicek’s all-state recognition came at defensive back. The senior was one of the Bulldogs’ tackling leaders, with 40 total. He recovered one fumble and was second on the team with five interceptions.

The MFL MarMac wrestling roster features nearly 30 athletes this year—including a record five girls—an amount that should help the team fill all 14 weight classes.

“We’ve got plenty of depth,” said head coach Chet Bachman.

Leading the team will be three state qualifiers from a season ago: senior heavyweight Jacob Trudo, junior Gabe McGeough, who will likely wrestle at 152 or 160 pounds, and sophomore Karter Decker, who will compete in the 138 or 145 weight classes.

Coming off a 3-20 season, second-year Central boys varsity basketball coach Brady Stramer looks to improve the team as players and individuals behind a philosophy that promotes helping people above all else.

Fueled by a love of the game and an enjoyment of competition, Stramer turned to coaching when playing was no longer an option, and the entire endeavor has been nothing short of a “rewarding experience.”

“My favorite thing about coaching is working with the students and seeing them improve,” Stramer said.

After going on postseason runs and reaching the regional finals the last two seasons, Central girls varsity basketball coach Mark Wiley is expecting more of the same this season.

The 14th-year head coach has taken a love of sports, developed at a young age playing ball against his brothers, and used that to transform the program into a regular contender, winning double-digit games nine times and finishing above .500 seven times since the 2007-2008 season, not to mention last year’s stellar 21-4 record that led to a competitive loss in the Class 1A - Region 3 championship game.

After losing seven seniors—most of whom started or saw significant playing time a year ago—the back-to-back Upper Iowa Conference champion MFL MarMac girls basketball team is looking to reload.

“We’ve got a lot of girls who have gotten some quality minutes at the varsity level,” said head coach Jason Winter. “This year, they’re just going to have to play more minutes and be relied upon a lot more than last year.”

That includes senior Kayden Gillitzer and juniors Miranda Lang, Lakota Morrissey and Riley Moreland. The last two are coming off injuries.

This year’s MFL MarMac boys basketball team is admittedly inexperienced, but head coach Eric Dettbarn hopes the Bulldogs can make up for that with athleticism and good attitude.

Although the team is senior-heavy again, with seven, due to a strong 12th-grade class last season that helped propelled the Bulldogs to the top spot in the conference, only Cayden Ball has seen considerable varsity playing time. The guard was honorable mention all-conference a year ago, and will be relied upon to do much of the scoring with junior Cullen McShane, who also brings valuable experience to the group.

A tale of two halves: St. Ansgar rallies past Bulldogs in quarterfinal game

Following MFL MarMac’s Class A quarterfinal loss at St. Ansgar on Nov. 6, senior Max Havlicek hoisted the team’s state participant trophy for fans to see. The Bulldogs finished the season 9-2. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Just like he did throughout the season, running back Cullen McShane made Saints defenders miss Friday night. The junior ran the ball 10 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. The total pushed him to 1,477 yards on the season, surpassing the 1,312 by Brad Mohs in 1980 that was the single season school record.

Karter Decker streaked to the end zone after catching a pass from quarterback Max Havlicek in the first quarter of the Nov. 6 loss to St. Ansgar.

The MFL MarMac football team lost its Nov. 6 Class A quarterfinal game at undefeated St. Ansgar 49-14, closing the book on an unforgettable season.

“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “Who would’ve thought, at the beginning of the season, we’d be sitting here in the quarterfinals—281 schools in the state of Iowa didn’t get the opportunity we had to play in the quarterfinals. That’s pretty special for the guys to make it that far with only one or two guys who were starters last year on offense. To start this game, we had 10 underclassmen starting on defense against a senior-laden team.”

Setting goals, keeping positive mindset helped Grau reach state level

MFL MarMac’s Clare Grau capped off a stellar freshman season by running in the state cross country meet on Oct. 31. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau has been a lifelong runner. In seventh grade, she joined the middle cross country team, then kept with the sport as she entered high school this fall.

“I enjoy running a lot,” she said. “It takes your mind off things.”

“And,” she added, “you can set goals for yourself.”

When the season started, Grau admitted running in the state cross country meet wasn’t necessarily on her mind.
