Bulldog football team cruises to 2-0 record

The MFL MarMac football team upped its record to 2-0 Sept. 4, with a convincing 35-13 victory at Alburnett.

Like the previous week, where the Bulldogs’ special teams tallied two touchdowns before the offense even took the field, Friday night’s game got off to a fast start. Just 13 seconds in, sophomore Karter Decker returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and MFL MarMac went up 7-0.

Around a minute later, after a huge completion from senior quarterback Max Havlicek to senior receiver Cayden Ball, junior running back Cullen McShane scored from five yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 13-0 advantage.

Moser runs to fifth-place finish as MFL MarMac cross country season gets underway

In her first high school meet, Clare Grau finished 12th.

Caleb Nordheim led the MFL MarMac boys with a 13th-place finish on Sept. 3.

Sophomore Will Koether ran the course in 19:39.60, which was good for 16th place.

At last week’s meet, J.J. Lynd came in 32nd.

The MFL MarMac cross country team kicked off its season Sept. 3, in the lone home meet at Tri-City Golf Course outside Luana.

The team was led by junior Sydney Moser, who raced to a fifth-place finish with a time of 22:18.00. Freshman Clare Grau earned a time of 23:42.50, placing her 12th. Fellow freshmen Kaylee Walch and Ayla Gerndt finished 20th and 21st, respectively, with marks of 25:53.70 and 26:02.50. Ruby Koeller, another freshman, came in 26th at 28:43.60, while freshman Kaylee Nuehring took the 31st spot with a 30:04.70 time.

Central volleyball falls to 0-7

The Central Warriors volleyball team wrapped up the Midland Tournament on Sept. 5. They entered the tournament 0-3 on the season, and the struggles continued.

In match one, they took on the Cascade Cougars, dropping both sets, 21-5 and 21-11.

The team had five kills on 41 attempts, and was led by Kaitlyn Wiley with three. Ava Pensel earned the team’s four assists. In total, Central netted one ace serve on 17 serve attempts, with an 88.2 percent serve efficiency.

On defense, they scored 15 digs, seven of which went to Maddie Wille.

New Hampton, Turkey Valley too much for Bulldogs

The MFL MarMac volleyball team dropped to 0-3 last week, following losses to New Hampton and host Turkey Valley at a triangular on Sept. 1

The Bulldogs were swept by New Hampton, 2-0, in the first game, with set scores of 25-19 and 25-17.

In the second game, MFL MarMac fell to Turkey valley 2-1. The match-up started off well for the Bulldogs, who won the first set 25-17—their first set victory this season. They struggled to keep the momentum going in the final two, though, losing 25-14 and 15-12.

MFL MarMac will participate in another triangular this week, taking on West Central and host Maquoketa Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

MFL MarMac rolls to record-breaking 65-28 win over Maquoketa Valley

Wing back Karter Decker carried the ball five times for the Bulldogs, accumulating 43 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown.

The MFL MarMac football team rolled to a 65-28 victory over visiting Maquoketa Valley in the season opener Aug. 28—a school record for points scored in a game.

“I believed in my guys, believed we were going to win,” acknowledged head coach Dan Anderson. “But if you would’ve said we were going to put 65 points on the board in the first one of the year, I would’ve said, ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to happen.’”

“We didn’t make the mistakes,” he said. “That team we played is a better football team than that. They made some mistakes and we capitalized on them.”

Bulldogs drop first game to Cascade

The MFL MarMac volleyball team lost its season-opening game to Cascade, 3-0, on Aug. 25. The first set was the closest of the match, with the Bulldogs falling 25-21. However, haunted by service errors and some strong serving on the Cougars’ part, MFL MarMac dropped the following two sets 25-18 and 25-8, respectively.

Junior Riley Moreland had two kills and two blocks for the Bulldogs, in addition to eight digs. Senior Kayden Gillitzer was also key at the net, with two kills and one block. Senior Lexy Johnson led the team with 16 digs, while Abby Schellhorn and Miranda Lang each picked up eight.

The Bulldogs will look to earn their first win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in a triangular at Turkey Valley.

Warriors fall in season opener

It was a rough start to the Central Warriors’ football season Friday night, as the team lost its home opener against the Kee Hawks, 54-14.

From the start, the Warriors had trouble moving and protecting the ball.

Quarterback Evan Schroeder completed four of 13 passes for 11 yards, while throwing four interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. The rushing attack totaled 38 attempts for 89 yards, an average of 2.8 yards per carry.

Central volleyball starts season at tourney

The Central Warriors volleyball team started the season on Aug. 29, losing all three games at a tournament at Cascade.

In the first game against the Springville Orioles, the Warriors lost in straight sets by the scores of 21-12 and 21-6. The team ended up with a kill efficiency of just 40.9 percent and totaled one block. The Warriors managed two ace serves and a 70 percent serve efficiency, while recording four assists and 12 digs.

Ava Pensel led the way with three assists and Chelsia Larson was responsible for the team’s only block. Maddy Wille totaled four of the team’s 12 digs.

Central volleyball coach is driven by love of sports

In his second season as head coach of Central’s volleyball program, the 20-year coaching veteran Mike Smith is looking to slow things down, get the team to play more consistently and understand the psychology of the players more, in order to improve relations and maximize potential.

Part of this is spurred by a coaching philosophy that focuses on constantly improving and getting better.

“You may not win them all, but as long as the team keeps getting better, then you are coaching them,” Smith said.

MFL MarMac coaches discuss pandemic’s impact on fall sports

When Iowa high school fall sports seasons kick off this week, opposing teams won’t be the only challenge athletes face this year. They’re also dealing with new health and safety measures implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Preparing for the season was difficult because we didn’t even know if the season would be delayed or cancelled,” said MFL MarMac’s head volleyball coach, Angela Adney. “The girls were given about a week’s notice that the season would be officially beginning, and practice times were adjusted to work around many commitments the girls already had scheduled.”
