One team, one athlete and Courier Press named to Prairie du Chien Athletic Hall of Fame

The 1982-83 girls basketball team, Shelly Howe, and the Courier Press, represented by Gary Howe, were inducted into the Prairie du Chien High School Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime of Friday's football game versus River Valley. The 1982-83 girls basketball team, Shelly Howe and the Courier Press were named to the Prairie du Chien Athletic Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony at halftime of Friday night’s Prairie du Chien football game versus River Valley.

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks hosted the River Valley Blackhawks on Friday night in each team’s SWC opener. Valley (2-1, 1-0) was able to combine a steady run game with a couple of long passing plays to move the ball down field consistently en route to an 18-7 victory over Prairie du Chien (2-1, 0-1).

The Prairie du Chien volleyball team lost a very exciting and hard-fought battle against River Valley on Thursday night. 

The Hawks came out with intensity and took the first set 25-22. Valley battled back and won the second set 25-12, but the Hawks didn't go away quietly. In the third and fourth sets, both teams showed toughness and grit with a lot of long volleys and exciting play. However, the Hawks lost both sets.

The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team opened their home season Thursday night with two exciting and closely matched contests with the Golden Eagles of Mauston.  

The varsity took the field first in what would prove to be a battle of defenses.

The Prairie du Chien Lady Hawk golfers competed in the Ringen Invitational at Darlington Country Club on Aug. 23.  

The ladies improved different aspects of their game and scoring, which led to a seventh place finish with a team score of 476. Macy Sander carded a 110 to lead the Lady Hawks in scoring and medaled in the event with an eighth-place individual low score. Allison Kennedy added 115, Molly Peterson 118, Kendall Hill 133, and Lydia Seeley a 137.

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks football team hosted a scrimmage with Westby and Fennimore Friday evening at Prairie du Chien High School.

Along with the round robin varsity action, junior varsity teams participated as well on the nice, sunny day.

A good crowd enjoyed seeing Prairie du Chien as they prepared for the upcoming season, which begins on Saturday, Aug. 24 with a noon game versus La Crosse Aquinas at UW-La Crosse.

Over the past year, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA)  has approved two separate conference realignment proposals affecting high school football in Wisconsin for the next three seasons.


Hoppers’ fine season comes to an end


The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers’ stellar season came to an end with a 9-3 loss to Waupun in the Class A American Legion State Baseball Tournament Monday night in Westby.

The Hoppers finished the season with a 29-8 record. They were 2-2 in the state tournament.

The Hoppers were defeated by Waupaca 3-0 in their first game of the double elimination state tournament Friday afternoon.
