A half century of Prairie du Chien wrestling

Mike Lenzendorf’s arm is raised as the Division 2 State Champion at 275 pounds to cap a 44-0 2004-2005 season.

Prairie du Chien High School wrestling is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, having begun during the 1969-1970 school year after interest in the sport grew over the previous few years. The program has had several highlights over the years and is continuing to build a tradition of success.

River Ridge Dance Team advances to state

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the River Ridge Dance Team attended the Southern Regional Dance competition held by WACPC in Watertown, Wis. 

The past week was hard to get practice in with the weather and having to cancel practices, and with games being postponed. The team was able to practice a couple times during the week and picked up an extra performance during an eighth-grade basketball game so that they could get one more performance in before competing.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the PDC matmen traveled to Hustisford for the 34th Annual Hustisford Invitational. 

This invite has 14 teams competing. The Blackhawks would have a great tournament, securing 34 individual wins against 11 losses, and crowning six champions. PDC, as a team, scored 263.5 points. Whitewater finished second with 187 points and Johnson Creek third with 157 points. The grapplers placed as follows:

PdC wrestlers fall to Lancaster

Lancaster High School was the host for a winner take all dual on Friday, Jan. 25. In a battle to determine who would be crowned outright SWC Champs, two highly ranked teams would lock horns. Lancaster came into the match with a 13-0 overall record and a ranking of #5 in D3. PDC came into the dual with a 15-1 overall record and a ranking of #6 in D2. Something had to give.

The Hawks boys basketball team returned home with an afternoon affair against Barneveld on Saturday, Jan. 26. Barneveld came in winning seven games in a row and the Hawks winning the past five games.

Hawkettes advance to state


The Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes traveled to Watertown, Wis., for the WACPC Regional Dance Competition on Saturday, Jan. 26. They performed in the D5 Pom Division and the D3 Kick Division. The team placed fifth in Pom and first in Kick. The first-place finish makes them the Regional Champions and advances them to state. The State Dance Competition is Saturday, Feb. 2 in La Crosse. “We’d love to see some familiar faces in the crowd cheering us on!” said Head Coach Bobbi Gofus. The River Ridge-Cassville wrestling team hosted Pecatonica-Argyle on Jan. 17. It was Parents’ and Senior Night.

Pecatonica-Argyle won the dual meet by a score of 45-17.

At 132, there was a double forfeit.

The Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes competed at a dance competition in Sparta on Saturday, Jan. 19. 

The team brought home two, first-place trophies and a second-place trophy. They placed first in the Jazz and Kick categories and second in the Pom category.

Hornets pull away from Indians

Wauzeka-Steuben steadily pulled away from host Seneca to win a Ridge and Valley boys basketball game, 68-50, Thursday night.

Wauzeka-Steuben scored on a lay-up just before the halftime buzzer to take a 33-21 lead. Wauzeka-Steuben outscored Seneca 35-29 in the second half.

Carter Lomas poured in a game-high 24 points to pace the Hornets. Jake Reichmann netted 20 and Gavin Ralph scored 13.

PdC wrestlers win SPASH Duals

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the PDC grapplers traveled to Stevens Point for the SPASH Duals. These duals are made up of two, five-team pools. A team wrestles all teams in their pool to determine their placement match. A year ago, PDC was crowned champs, so they were looking for the repeat. 

PDC would win their pool by the following: PDC 53 - DC Everest 21, PDC 77 - SPASH JV 6, PDC 38 - Oconto Falls 36, PDC 78 - Sussex Hamilton 0.
