Royals fall at Potosi

Looking to make some noise as the number nine seed in a loaded half sectional that featured five top-10 ranked teams in D5, the Seneca Royals boys basketball team traveled to eighth seeded Hillsboro last Tuesday, March 4, and came away with a 79-69 victory. Leading scorer for the Royals was Dawson Davidson with 15 points.

After four years of close calls and near misses in three different sports, Prairie du Chien senior Blake Thiry (52-3) reached the mountaintop this past Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.
He defeated Seymour junior Cael Leisgang 12-0 in the D2 215 pound state championship match to earn his first career state championship. In the process, he became the seventh state champion in Prairie du Chien Wrestling history.

River Ridge Timberwolves dominate Chieftains

Perhaps the hottest team in southwest Wisconsin, coach Jim Wagner’s River Ridge boys basketball team concluded the regular season last Thursday night with a convincing 58-33 victory over Potosi, and ride into the WIAA tournament on a 10-game winning streak.
Last Thursday night’s victory over the Chieftains created a three-way tie for this year’s Six Rivers West conference title, as River Ridge, Potosi and Highland all concluded conference play with a record of 17-2.

The postseason got underway last week for Wisconsin girls basketball teams and following a first-round bye, third seed Prairie du Chien took to the court last Thursday night when they welcomed sixth seed River Valley for a D3 regional quarterfinal. Prairie quickly jumped out to a 36 to 15 halftime lead on River Valley before holding off in the second half for a 62-48 win.

Dressler qualifies for state

Prairie du Chien/Fennimore senior Taia Dressler etched her name in the program’s record book during the sectional meet at Dodgeville this past Saturday by qualifying for the WIAA Individual State Gymnastics meet on the floor exercise by placing fifth individually with a personal best score of 9.125. 
Dressler also finished 11th on the balance beam with a score of 8.600 and  16th on the uneven bars with a score of 7.900.

The Prairie du Chien boys basketball team wrapped up its home schedule last Monday, Feb. 24 when they hosted La Crosse Logan. The Rangers took a 36-24 lead into halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 71-53 victory. Sam Kramer (16 points) and Brady Lenzendorf (15 points) led the Hawks in scoring with Hunter Straka (eight points), Steven Duha and Cayden Sutter (four points each), Tyler Steiber (three points), Nick McCullick (two points), Ashton Landt and Brock Folsom (one point each) rounding out the Hawks scoring log.

River Ridge girls fall at Shullsburg

In a low-scoring contest between two of the top teams in the Six Rivers West conference, host Shullsburg ended the 2024-25 season for coach Veronica Zinkle’s River Ridge Timberwolves last Saturday night with a 42-34 division 5 regional final loss.
The Lady Timberwolves concluded the season with a record of 17-10 after finishing third in the league standings with a mark of 7-8.
Against the host Miners last Saturday night, coach Zinkle’s squad trailed their opponent just 16-15 after one half of play.

Hornets stopped by River Ridge

The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets girls basketball team opened the postseason on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they welcomed the Seneca Royals to town. 
The third seed Hornets defeated the 14th seed Royals 60-39 to extend their winning streak to nine games. Emma Wall (19 points), Elizabeth Wright (14 points) and Kiley Manning (12 points) led W-S in scoring with Violet Mitchell (eight points), Macy Mitchell (three points), Isabella Bunders and Claudia Walz (two points each) rounding out the scoring lot for Wauzeka.

Seneca girls finish season at Wauzeka

The Seneca Royals girls basketball team ended their 2024-25 season last Tuesday, Feb. 25 with a 60-39 D5 regional quarterfinal loss at Wauzeka-Steuben. 
The Royals ended the season with an overall record of 3-18 and 3-9 in the Ridge & Valley Conference. 
The Hornets improved their overall record to 20-3 and advanced to face River Ridge in a regional semifinal game at Wauzeka last Friday night.

The Prairie du Chien girls basketball team ended the regular season last week with a pair of road games against ranked opponents. 
The Hawks was a trip to Cuba City last Tuesday, Feb. 18 for a battle with the Cubans, ranked fourth in D4 in the latest Wissports.net Coaches Poll.

Prairie du Chien jumped out to a 34-17 halftime lead before earning a 69-54 victory. The Cubans were without D1 recruit Olivia Olson (Milwaukee) as she missed the contest while recovering from an early season injury.
