Ila Mae Fenchel, 89, a resident of Mason City, IA since 1959, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018, at the IOOF Home and Community Therapy Center in Mason City, Iowa.

 Visitation was held Saturday, November 3, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa. Per Ila’s wishes, private family graveside services will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Hansen officiating.

Frances Stencel

Frances Lucile Stencel, 81, of McGregor, Iowa passed away Monday, October 22, 2018, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. Her body is gone, but her spirit is in heaven with Jesus. She was born February 20, 1937, to Francis Baird and Lula Irene (Ferguson) Gunn. Frances graduated high school in Jacksonville, IL and continued her education at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL and Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL, obtaining her Master’s Degree in Education.
Frances was united in marriage with John E. Stencel Jr. on June 15, 1963, in Elgin, IL. To this union two daughters were born. Throughout the years, Frances was an English teacher in Dundee, IL as well as Director of Study Skills Center and Library Head at Olney Central College in Olney, IL.  She was a member of Journey Church in Dubuque, Iowa and First Assembly of God Church in Olney.

L’Dean Fred Tielbar, 82, of Farmersburg, IA died Friday, October 26, 2018, at his home in Farmersburg. L’Dean was born March 2, 1936, to Orval and Selma (Leupker) Tielbar on the Leupker Farm in Farmersburg. He attended Hawkeye Country School and Farmersburg High School and graduated from MFL High School. L’Dean served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.

L’Dean was united in marriage with Rose Mary Amundson on October 25, 1957, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, Iowa. Throughout the years, L’Dean drove semi, hauling milk and grain. He enjoyed playing cards and traveling, hunting and trap shooting. He played softball with the “Farmersburg Old-Timers.” He was a WWII buff, and liked building and collecting model planes. L’Dean was a lifelong member of the Farmersburg Fire Department, Monona Legion, NRA and St. John Lutheran Church.

Maxine Leah Johnson, 80, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday,  October 10, 2018 at her home in New Hampton,. Maxine was born June 24, 1938, to Donald and Marcella (Sabbann) Tayek in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She graduated from Monona High School in 1956 and earned her degree from Upper Iowa University.

Maxine was united in marriage with John Johnson. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced. Throughout the years, Maxine was a special education teacher in Farmersburg, Iowa; secretary for Dr. Pfeiffer in McGregor, Iowa; and also worked at Community Action for many years. She was also the first woman tour guide at Spook Cave. She enjoyed making crafts, knitting and crocheting. Maxine tended a large garden and would preserve her harvests. In her spare time, she relaxed by reading and doing word search puzzles. Maxine was a 4-H member and helped with many 4-H projects.

Dorothy M. Poull, 103, of Grant’s Pass, Oregon, died Monday, October 1, 2018, at Ashley Manor in Grant’s Pass. Dorothy was born on October 30, 1914, to Edward and Ruby (Peterman) Star in Volga City, Iowa. She grew up in Volga and attended the country school in Highland Township and graduated high school in Volga in 1932. Dorothy attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1936. She taught school in Gaza and Greely, Iowa from 1936-39.

Billy Butikofer

Billy Gene Butikofer, 77, of Elkader passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He was born December 31, 1940, in Elkader, to Walter and Lydia (Dennler) Butikofer. Bill was confirmed at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Elgin. He graduated from Elkader High School with the Class of 1958.  He served in the United States Army in Germany.

He was united in marriage to Marcia C. Metzger on October 10, 1964. They had three children.

Bill was a devoted farmer, milking dairy cows until the fall of 2001. During his early years, he enjoyed being a member of 4-H and FFA. For a time, he worked at Walch Ford; then Bill and brother Norbert operated the Sinclair gas station, both in Elkader. Bill was a loyal member of Bethany Church, American Legion, and the Farm Bureau.

MaryAnn Gray, 86, of Elkader, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the Elkader Care Center. MaryAnn Seeland Gray, daughter of Louis and Florence (Drallmeier) Seeland, was born February 12, 1932, in Boardman Township at her family home. She was baptized May 15, 1932, at Lutheran Lions Lutheran Church at Clayton Center, Iowa.

She went to Boardman country school through junior high and then Elkader High School where she graduated on May 21, 1950. She met Arlyn Gerald Gray through mutual friends, Merlin and Lenora Mae Anderson, and they married on December 7, 1950 at Peace Evangelical Church of Christ, Elkader. She was confirmed March 18, 1951, by Rev. Paul Kitterer, Peace Evangelical Church of Christ, Elkader.

Four children were born to this marriage, Cheryl, Jay (Lynn), Dean and Duane. MaryAnn and Arlyn raised and provided for their children on her home farm, that now is 140 years in the Seeland/Gray family.

George Oliver Miller, 96, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.

He was born October 27, 1921, in Wadena to Adrian Lewis and Eva (Spore) Miller.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Berse on November 26, 1940. One son was born to this union. He served in the United States Army. George was the barber in Volga from 1948, retiring in 1999. He also drove school bus for Central Community Schools, Elkader from 1956-1989.

He was a member of the American Legion, enjoyed playing blackjack, pool, bowling and dancing. Making wine was a favorite pastime.

Betty Reeg, 87, of Monona, Iowa, went to be with her Lord on October 5, 2018. Betty Jean was born November 11, 1930, at the McGregor Hospital to Alfred Flexman and Alice Henrietta (Carlson) Siegele. She was baptized (sponsors were Betty’s grandparents, Carl and Emma Carlson) on January 18, 1931 and confirmed September 9, 1945 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural McGregor, Iowa.
Betty attended rural McGregor schools through the eighth grade, graduating from McGregor High School in 1949. Betty then moved to Cedar Rapids to attend the Hunter Business School, after which she secured employment in Savannah, Illinois as a clerk-typist in the Ordnance Depot office. There she met her love, Carlyle Vincent Reeg, being united in marriage December 24, 1954, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bellevue, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Steven Carlyle and Sandra Jean.

Carl Irving Wessel, 87, of Elkader passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. He was born June 30, 1931, in Wood, Iowa, to Irving John and Mildred (Brockmeyer) Wessel. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1950.

Carl served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He received the Korean Service Medal W/1 Bronze Service Star, a Combat Infantry Badge and a United Nations Service Medal.
