Richard J. 'Dick' Fernette

Richard J. “Dick” Fernette, 56, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Saturday, Nov. 3, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, following a courageous and heroic 10-year battle with cancer. 

Dick was born May 16, 1962, and raised in Prairie du Chien, the son of Dick and Marie Fernette. He graduated from Prairie du Chien High School and remained in the area, where he worked and established strong relationships at DH Satellite, River Town Ironworks, and the Department of Corrections in Boscobel and Prairie du Chien. 

Dick was an avid Packer fan and had a passion for the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, and help his good friend, Dave Huser, on his farm. However Dick’s greatest love was for his son and best friend, Brady.

Clifford L. Ray

Clifford L. Ray, 95, formerly of Prairie du Chien, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, in Waupaca. 

He was born May 15, 1923, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Ora and Lenore (Halverson) Ray. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Ruby Shedivy on Feb. 24, 1946, at St. John’s Church in Prairie du Chien. After his service, Clifford worked for Oscar Mayer in Prairie du Chien and later retired from General Motors in Janesville. In 1984, Clifford and Ruby retired to Las Vegas, Nev. Ruby preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 2015.

He is survived by his children, Sheila Ray, of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas Ray, of Vietnam; his grandchildren Lisa and Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a sister Adeline Ray.

Ann Weldy

Ann Weldy passed away peacefully on Oct. 18, supported by the prayers of her family.

Ann was born Ann Joyce Seely, on the Seely family farm outside of Wauzeka, on April 21, 1934. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Rodney, her parents William and Gunda Seely, older sister Ruth, and younger brother Dale.

Frances Lucile Stencel

Frances Lucile Stencel, 81, of McGregor, Iowa, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. Her body is gone, but her spirit is in heaven with Jesus. 

She was born Feb. 20, 1937, to Francis Baird and Lula Irene (Ferguson) Gunn. Frances graduated high school in Jacksonville, Ill. and continued her education at Illinois College in Jacksonville,  and Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill., obtaining her master’s degree in education.

Michael J. 'Mick' Cull

Michael J. “Mick” Cull, 81, of Bloomington, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, at Our House Senior Living Memory Care in Richland Center. 

He was born July 17, 1937, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Kenneth and Marie (Mergen) Cull. Mick graduated from Bloomington High School in 1955. He farmed on the Cull Family Farm in Little Grant Township, where he raised beef and hogs until his retirement. Mick was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #4416 in Bloomington, and he was also a member of the Grant County Cattlemen’s Association.

Mick is survived by his sister, MaryAnn (Phil) Ryan; nieces, Annie M. Cull and Rochelle Cull; and nephews; Michael (Cheryl) Ryan, James (Sheila) Ryan and Tony (Pegi) Cull.

Jeanne M. Ruehlow

Jeanne M. Ruehlow, 63, of Savannah, Ga., and originally from Prairie du Chien, passed on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Jeanne was born on Nov. 11, 1954, to the late William J. and Ellen “Honey” A. (Kramer) Walker, who raised six girls in Prairie du Chien. Jeanne graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1973 and then from Upper Iowa University.

Jeanne married Donald C. Ruehlow in 1977, and together they had two children, Nicole and Daniel.

Thomas J. McGrath

Thomas J. McGrath passed away Oct. 23, at Hospice Alliance House in Pleasant Prairie. 

Tom was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Prairie du Chien, to Thomas P. and Ruth Marie (Smrcina) McGrath. After graduating from high school in Prairie du Chien, Tom enlisted and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, where he was awarded the National Defense Service medal. Tom settled down in California, where he worked as an iron worker until his retirement. Tom was well-known for his physical strength, his strong work ethic and his wonderful sense of humor and story telling. He was an avid fisherman and loved doing jigsaw puzzles and gambling in his later years.

Michael Charles Cavanaugh

Michael Charles Cavanaugh, 72, of Dunedin, Fla., died Sunday, May 27. Michael was born on Aug. 22, 1945, to Orrel and Mary (Kluss) Cavanaugh in Miami, Fla. After graduating high school, where he was a star basketball player, Mike attended Amundsen Junior College in Chicago, Ill.

Daniel Joseph Scheckel

Daniel Joseph Scheckel, 50, beloved second son of Larry and Ann Scheckel, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Gundersen Hospital, from complications of pneumonia.

Dan was born to Lawrence “Larry” and Ann (Martin) Scheckel on May 2, 1968, at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, their second of three sons.

Dan and his brother, Patrick, had both a lawn mowing service and a paper route for many years. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1983, and from Tomah High School in the class of 1987.
