Betty C. Rentschler

Betty Carol Rentschler, 82, of St. Olaf, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020.      

Survivors include her husband, Curtis; five children, Rick (Beth) Rentschler of St. Olaf, Cindie (Lonny) Kuehl of Garnavillo, Brenda (Troy) Haberichter of Bagley, Wis., Julie (Steven) Fette of Coggon and Roxanne (Terry) Puelz of Garnavillo; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Dottie) Syverson of El Monte, Calif.; and one sister, Connie (Ervin) Jones of Swisher. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Randy Rentschler.    

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

LaVonne A. "Bonnie" Meyer

LaVonne “Bonnie” Adell Meyer, 88, of Giard, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, Wis. Bonnie was born Dec. 28, 1931, to Kenneth and Alberta (Huff) Cahoon on the family farm, rural McGregor. She attended the country school at Smokey Hollow near Effigy Mounds, then the school in Marquette and graduated from Monona High School in 1950.

Kenneth Edwin Kramer, 96, Manchester (formerly of Strawberry Point), passed away Oct. 28, 2020, surrounded by his children—Bruce Alan (and Sarah Ruth), Jan Kenneth and Karla Mary Grauberger—at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Lavon Martins

Lavon Martins, 92, of Postville, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Lavon was born Sept. 4, 1928, to Larry and Bessie (Segrist) Ewing in Franklin Township. She was baptized on April 17, 1938, and confirmed on Oct. 2, 1955. She attended Forest Mills Country School and graduated from Waukon High School.

Lavon was united in marriage with Virgil Walter Martins on Feb. 13, 1955, at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. Lavon worked at Douglas Drug Store and was a farm wife. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, having coffee with her sister, Lola, going to sales and doing ceramics. 

Surviving Lavon are many family members on both the Ewing and Martins side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents, Larry and Bessie Ewing; and one sister, Lola Mork.

Kay M. Troester

Kay Melinda Troester, 71, of Elkader, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, surrounded by her family due to complications from cancer. She was born on April 21, 1949, in rural Edgewood, to Kenneth and Maxine (Otterbeck) Weyant.  

On April 20, 1968, Kay was united in marriage to Richard Troester of Elkader. For over 40 years, they farmed together and raised registered Guernsey cattle. After retiring and moving to town, Kay enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling to Virginia, going to her grandchildren’s ball games, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and tending to her flowers.

Marjorie E. 'Marge' Hamann

Marjorie E. (Burlingame) Hamann (Marge) died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, at 98 years of age.

Marge was born May 7, 1922, to Edward Burlingame Sr. and Elisabeth (Deringer) Burlingame in Elkader. She was one of seven children, raised by a serious shopkeeper and a hard-working mother. As a child living through the economic depression, she enjoyed the simple pleasure of play especially with her younger sister Ruth. Life centered on the support of friends and family through Catholic school and church activities.

Steven L. Schlitter

Steven Lynn Schlitter was born Dec. 29, 1959, in Dubuque, to Alice and Leo Schlitter. 

Steve grew up farming, was a welder at Double L and Bituma, and later was an owner of Schlitter’s Whitewashing. 

Steve passed away Oct. 14, 2020, at his home in Viroqua, Wis., at the age of 60. 

Survivors include his mother, Alice Schlitter of Waterville; siblings Luanne Miller (Steve) of McGregor, Stan Schlitter of Waterville and Linda White of Smith Station, Ala.; and son, Shane Fox (Schlitter) of Ardmore, Okla.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Leo Schlitter and grandparents Lester and DELillia Schlitter and Julius and Mabel Johnson.

Cheryll Scherf

Cheryll Scherf, 85, of Farmersburg, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Wagner Township Cemetery in Farmersburg. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Manchester is assisting the family.

Geraldine A. French

Geraldine (Gerry) Adeline French left her earthly home to join the love of her life and her lord on Oct. 12, 2020. Gerry was born March 23, 1928, outside Geddes, S.D., to Andrew and Adela (Bartekoske) Shea, the oldest of 14 children.  

Gerry was united in marriage to Kenneth (Kenny) Gene French on March 17, 1955, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Together, they had seven children: Terry (Dan) Sullivan, Dodgeville, Wis.; Sharon Taylor, Arlington; Jeanne (Mark) Mellon, Guttenberg; Cindy (Steve) Wendl, Anamosa; Jayme French, Manchester; Gary (Jennifer) French, Sydney, Australia; and Merry French, Aurora.

Robert D. Buckner

Robert Dean Buckner, 94, of Elkader, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader. He was born in Marion on Jan. 19, 1926, to Mike “MJ” and Neola (Staman) Buckner. Robert (Bob) was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
