Paul Fiddler

Paul Fiddler, 97, of McGregor, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at Prairie Maison under hospice care in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

He was the son of Michael and Jennie (Albright) Fiddler. Paul was baptized and confirmed Catholic. He attended school in Blue Earth, Minn..

Paul was united in marriage with Delores Radermaker on Aug. 2, 1950, in Butler, Kan. He farmed before being drafted into the United States Army on Dec. 18, 1944. Paul served six months in the South Pacific, before being discharged on Jan. 31, 1946. He was at the signing of Japan Peace Treaty.

Zelma L. Moore

Zelma L. Moore, 93, of McGregor, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Zelma Louene “Percie” Moore, the daughter of Percy Roy and Zelma Marie (Huber) Freeman, was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Norwood, Ohio.  

She was baptized and confirmed on March 24, 1940, at the Congregational Church in McGregor. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1943 and was the co-valedictorian of her class. Percie was united in marriage with Kenneth James Moore on July 13, 1946, at the Congregational Church in McGregor. Percie worked as an usher at the McGregor Theater, was a telephone operator, worked at Vick’s Grocery Store, was an office manager at Brooks-Teaser Insurance and worked at Star Milk Coolers.

Marjorie Mae Cook

Marjorie Mae Cook, 91, of Marquette, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Marjorie was born June 22, 1927 to Raymond Henry and Winifred (Boyle) Fields. When Marjorie was a child, she rode a sled downhill in Marquette, off the bench and walked to school. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1945.

Gene Klinge

Bring your best memories and stories to share as the family of Gene Klinge celebrates his life on Jan. 26, at 1:30 p.m., in a place very special to him, the gymnasium which bears his name at West Central Community School in Maynard. The family is looking forward to visiting with everyone prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

In the spirit of the occasion, the family requests those attending wear their favorite school apparel, be it Blue Devil blue, Indian orange, Hawkeye black and gold or even Minnesota Viking purple, or camouflage would be appropriate. If you’d rather, feel free to wear his signature red or orange socks in his honor.

Marjorie A. Goldsmith

Marjorie A. Goldsmith, 89, of McGregor, formerly of Earlville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019.

Marjorie Ann Wells was born March 12, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Leslie and Ruth (Alexander) Wells. She married Willis Thuman in June 1948 in Oskaloosa, and he passed away in 1962. On Dec. 28, 1963, she married Alfred Goldsmith in Stone City. Marjorie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she enjoyed her church family and activities. She enjoyed baking, sewing and especially being with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Jeffrey John Hemmer

Jeffrey John Hemmer, 53, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., walked back into the arms of the Maker on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, after an extended illness. 

He was born on Sept. 27, 1965, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., the son of Harold Thomas and Donna (Leard) Hemmer. Jeffrey graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1984. He married the lady who made his heart sing, Paula (Gjetley-Kautman), on March 14, 1987, and they spent the next three decades cultivating their love and nurturing their growing family.

Richard T. Kleinow

Richard T. Kleinow, 53, of McGregor, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at his home. He was born on Feb. 21, 1965, in McGregor, the son of Bill and Jonell (Jones) Kleinow. Richard graduated from Bloomington High School in 1983. He served his country in the United States Army from 1983 until his honorable discharge in 1990. Following his honorable discharge, Richard was employed with the barge line and later began employment with 3M, where he was currently working. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, hunting morels, four-wheeler races and target shooting. Richard also enjoyed watching NASCAR. He dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Harry G. Schwietert

Harry G. Schwietert, 88, was born on March 19, 1930, on the family farm near McGregor, the son of Gustav and Hermine (Nordemann) Schwietert. He died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Harry attended the local country school and worked on the family farm for many years. He loved inventing, tinkering and visiting with friends. He spent a lot of time with his grandsons, teaching them mechanics and farming. On June 1, 1968, Harry was united in marriage with Betty Troester at St. Peters Church in Garnavillo.

Survivors include wife Betty; one son, John (Darla), and two grandsons, Cody and Justus, all of McGregor; one sister, Ruth DeGroot, of Ottawa Kan.; niece Shirley and nephew John.

Shirley K. Weller

Shirley Kujawa Weller, 94, of Glen Burnie, Md., passed away on Dec. 5, 2018. 

Shirley was born on May 24, 1924, in Marquette, to the late Frank and Gladys Kujawa. 

She graduated from Marquette High School Class of 1941. In 1946, she married Everett Weller, of McGregor.  Because of Everett’s Army career, they lived in six states and two foreign countries. She enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, reading and playing cards. Shirley was a member of Glen Burnie Baptist Church.  

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Everett H. Weller, and her sister, Elma Reetz.

Maxine Leah Johnson

Maxine Leah Johnson, 80, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, at her home in New Hampton, Iowa. Maxine was born June 24, 1938, to Donald and Marcella (Sabbann) Tayek in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She graduated from Monona High School in 1956, and earned her degree from Upper Iowa University.
