Steven L. Schlitter

Steven Lynn Schlitter was born Dec. 29, 1959, in Dubuque, to Alice and Leo Schlitter. 

Steve grew up farming, was a welder at Double L and Bituma, and later was an owner of Schlitter’s Whitewashing. 

Steve passed away Oct. 14, 2020, at his home in Viroqua, Wis., at the age of 60. 

Survivors include his mother, Alice Schlitter of Waterville; siblings Luanne Miller (Steve) of McGregor, Stan Schlitter of Waterville and Linda White of Smith Station, Ala.; and son, Shane Fox (Schlitter) of Ardmore, Okla.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Leo Schlitter and grandparents Lester and DELillia Schlitter and Julius and Mabel Johnson.

Cheryll Scherf

Cheryll Scherf, 85, of Farmersburg, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Wagner Township Cemetery in Farmersburg. All guests are respectfully requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Manchester is assisting the family.

Geraldine A. French

Geraldine (Gerry) Adeline French left her earthly home to join the love of her life and her lord on Oct. 12, 2020. Gerry was born March 23, 1928, outside Geddes, S.D., to Andrew and Adela (Bartekoske) Shea, the oldest of 14 children.  

Gerry was united in marriage to Kenneth (Kenny) Gene French on March 17, 1955, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Together, they had seven children: Terry (Dan) Sullivan, Dodgeville, Wis.; Sharon Taylor, Arlington; Jeanne (Mark) Mellon, Guttenberg; Cindy (Steve) Wendl, Anamosa; Jayme French, Manchester; Gary (Jennifer) French, Sydney, Australia; and Merry French, Aurora.

Robert D. Buckner

Robert Dean Buckner, 94, of Elkader, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader. He was born in Marion on Jan. 19, 1926, to Mike “MJ” and Neola (Staman) Buckner. Robert (Bob) was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Daniel A. Nugent

Daniel “Dan” Allen Nugent, age 78, of rural Madelia, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020. Private services will be held. Lake Crystal Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Dan was born on Nov. 28, 1941, to Clarence and Laura (Drahn) Nugent in McGregor. 

Dan served individuals in the mental health field for many years. He was forever compassionate and a calming presence. Dan loved baseball—playing in his younger years and attending games and going on baseball tours in his later years. He enjoyed writing poetry and “words of wisdom.”

Virginia M. Freeze

Virginia Marie Freeze, 91, formerly of Hopkinton, died on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader after a long battle with multiple myeloma. Virginia was born Nov. 21,1928, in Manchester. She was the oldest daughter of Nicholas and Hattie (Benter) Mesch and spent most of her life living in Hopkinton. She graduated from the Hopkinton High School in 1946. She was a dedicated member of the Hopkinton Community Church.

Virginia was married to Leslie (Bud) Freeze on May 7, 1947. Three sons were born to this union. They were later divorced. Virginia held various roles for Lux Farms and Bucheit Poultry and worked there for 32 years. Virginia loved gardening and made many birds and squirrels happy by filling feeders throughout her life.

Richard J. Larimer

Richard J. Larimer, 72, of Cedar Falls, died Oct. 5, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. 

Richard was born on March 19, 1948, in Ames, to Robert and Minnie (Johnson) Larimer and married Karen Astin on Dec. 22, 1972. He worked as a special education teacher and consultant for many years. Richard was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls and enjoyed golfing, sports of all kinds and reading. He was always proud to be a Norwegian Lutheran. In his 10-year battle with cancer and other health complications, Richard never lost his easy-going attitude or his commitment to his family and faith.

Thomas R. Kitterman

CMSgt Thomas “Tom” Ray Kitterman, USAF Ret., age 74, died Oct. 4, 2020, with his family by his side.

Tom was born on a farm outside of Volga in northeast Iowa. In 1963, at the age of 17, he joined the Air Force and served until 1989, for a total of 26 years, four months and two days, as he proudly told anyone who asked. During his years of service, Tom had seven permanent duty stations and three short tours, including stations in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Virginia Sparrgrove

Virginia Sparrgrove, 93, of Strawberry Point, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. She was born on Dec. 18, 1926, in Postville, the daughter of Dr. Amos and Myrtle (Elder) Sherbon. Virginia attended school in Coggon and Center Point and was a graduate of Central City High School. She attended the University of Iowa for a year and then AIB in Des Moines. During WWII, Virginia worked in Des Moines making fuses for bombs.

Phyllis R. Freitag

Phyllis Ruth Freitag, 85, of Elkader, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center after having a stroke. She was born Jan. 26, 1935, in rural Elkport, to LeRoy and Beatrice Jennie (Mangold) Hansel.
