Francis “Fritz” Berns

Francis “Fritz” Berns died on Dec. 9, 2023, after a long and full life.

He was born Dec. 18, 1931, on the family farm outside Garnavillo, to Anton and Elizabeth (Wolter) Berns, the youngest of eight children. Several years after graduating from high school he enlisted in the Air Force. Once basic training was completed in 1953 at Parks Air Force Base in Haywood, Calif., he continued on to advanced individual training at Lowry Air Force Base in Aurora, Colo.

Marilyn Viola Kuehl, of Garnavillo, passed away on Dec. 18, 2023, at the Elkader Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 1 – 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Funeral services will commence at 2:30 p.m., at the church with burial to follow at Garnavillo City Cemetery. Pastor Gary Hatcher will officiate.

Bonnie Lee Moser, 81, of Des Moines, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, while in hospice care at Pine Acres Care Center in West Des Moines.

Bonnie will be cremated and a celebration of life service will be held in Guttenberg at a later date.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1942, in Guttenberg, the daughter of Elmer and Alverta (Harbaugh) Knudtson.

Samuel “Sam” Richard Wiskus, 77, of Colesburg passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.

Celebration of life will be 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Colesburg Library Community Room.

Inurnment will be at Hansel Cemetery in rural Garber.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center.

Burial was at Clayton Center Cemetery, in Clayton Center.

Barbara Jean Drahos, 88, of Postville, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at Gundersen Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis. surrounded by her daughter and a caring medical staff. 

She had requested no wake or funeral with a private burial at a later date.

Barbara was born July 3, 1935, to Lois (Kulper) Backes and Ernest Carl Backes. Barbara grew up in Guttenberg and enjoyed time at her grandfather’s farm.

Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 27, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Private inurnment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.
