Free concert and percussion workshop on July 14

Stars and Stripes Celebration July 3

Stars and Stripes Celebration organizers have planned a full day of entertainment for this Friday, July 3. Community members and visitors can expect a parade, fireworks, food, and children’s games. 

Community members and business owners are also encouraged to decorate their windows with red, white, and blue, contributing to the spirit of the Stars and Stripes Celebration, and to purchase honor ribbons for their loved ones lost and veterans of all wars.

County clock tower gets a facelift

The wooden clock tower that chimes above the Clayton County Courthouse is undergoing a complex restoration organizers hope will be complete by 2017. In April, Clayton County Historic Preservation Commission (CCHPC) applied for a second Historic Resource Development Project (HRDP) grant which, if received, will provide funding for beginning phase two of the clock tower repair scheduled for this summer.

Neil Webster, 94, of Guttenberg, was selected by the Stars and Stripes committee as this year’s Super Senior. Neil will be featured in the Stars and Stripes parade, which begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3.

City receives two major grants for River Park Drive water project

The City of Guttenberg was recently awarded two grants totalling $300,000 for the replacement of water mains along North River Park Drive. Total estimated project cost is $380,000.

  The City was awarded a $150,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)  by the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The grant was made possible by funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through a contingency fund.

Storm hits Clayton County


Storm flips semi This semi truck was flipped on its side by strong winds that accompanied a thunderstorm that passed through Clayton County on Monday morning, June 22. The driver reported that he had pulled onto the shoulder of Highway 52 just north of Millville to ride out the storm when it lifted the vehicle into the air and flipped it on its side.The driver was taken to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and treated for what was believed to be minor injuries. A severe thunderstorm accompanied by high winds roared across Clayton County Monday morning, June 22. The Clayton County Dispatch Office reported its first call at 7:49 a.m. indicating flash flooding between Effigy Mounds and Marquette.  By 8:09 a.m. weather spotters were out in the northern portion of the county.

Friday, July 3 Stars and Stripes events

The official schedule of events has been released for GD&T's annual Stars and Stripes Celebration to be held Friday, July 3.

The first event that Friday is the Interact 5K run/walk, with registration at 8:00 a.m. in the north gazebo near the veteran's memorial. Proceeds will be matched by the Guttenberg Rotary Club and will be used to purchase a shelter box for those in need.

City places new pool reconstruction on 2017 capital improvement plan; fundraising continues

City Manager Mary Willett addressed members of the swimming pool committee last week regarding the ongoing planning for pool updates. “It has been determined through the long process that has transpired that the swimming pool project is on the capital improvement plan (CIP) for the city for the fall of 2017. We now know that the pool cannot be refurbished and the city will need an entirely new facility,” she said.

Four Guttenberg men charged in mobile meth lab operation

Four Guttenberg men were arrested and a portion of Highway 136 between New Vienna and Dyersville was temporarily closed on Wednesday, June 10, following the discovery of a mobile meth lab in their vehicle.

A traffic stop was initiated by a Dyersville Police Department officer who identified Jason Schroeder driving a vehicle at approximately 5:37 p.m. The officer confirmed with dispatch that there was a valid warrant for Schroeder for possession of methamphetamine and then followed the vehicle north on Highway 136 from city limits until back-up officers arrived.

Planning for Stars & Stripes on Friday, July 3

Planning continues for the annual Stars and Stripes celebration in Guttenberg, scheduled for Friday, July 3. 

The first event that Friday begins at 8:00 a.m. Clayton Ridge Interact students, sponsored by the Guttenberg Rotary Club, will start collecting registrations for their first ever 5K run/walk in the north gazebo near the veteran's memorial. Proceeds will be used to purchase a shelter box for those in need.
