Mine reserve study group to meet

The mine reserve study group for Clayton County will meet Thursday, March 31, Thursday, April 14 and Thursday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. The March 31 meeting will be held at Central State Bank, 200 N. Main St., Elkader, in the “Community Room” at the bank’s drive-up facility. Thereafter, for meetings on April 14 and 28, the committee will meet at the Clayton County Office Building, 600 Gunder Road NE, Elkader. Members of the public are welcome to attend and listen, and now will have an opportunity to comment if they wish. The committee will take public comments in writing which may be unsigned but need to be brief and limited to one per person per meeting. Comments or questions may be placed in a comments box any time during the meeting.

River crest passes Guttenberg

The Mississippi River crested at Guttenberg over Easter weekend, and is expected to drop approximately four feet by next weekend.

The river caused some minor flooding this past week when it crested at 15.19 feet on March 25.

Early Monday morning, March 28, the river stood at 13.63 feet. In Guttenberg, major flood stage is 21 feet; moderate flood stage is 18 feet, minor stage is 15 feet, and "action" stage is 12 feet.

Dozens circulated through the mock bedroom of a teenage boy on Tuesday, March 22, in Elkader. Hidden in Plain Sight, a substance abuse awareness program hosted by Clayton County Community Collaboration Council (5C), law enforcement agencies and other community partners, brought adults into a mock bedroom to identify indicators of drug use and other risky behaviors.

Tickets are now on sale for the Rock and Roll on the River Show to be held Saturday, April 9, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. The evening will feature music from the golden era of rock and roll.

This year's featured entertainment will include local favorites Backwater. The band is known for its high-energy, danceable music featuring hits from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Firefighters dance this Saturday

The annual benefit dance for the Guttenberg Fire Department will be held this Saturday, March 26, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg.

The evening will feature music by "Pizzin in the Wind" from 6 p.m. to midnight. Winners of raffle prizes will also be announced that evening.

Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase fire/extrication equipment.

Handmade blankets warm hearts

The Guttenberg Fire Department received a gift last week from Edgewood resident Vicki Cripe, who donated four fleece blankets for families who may need them after a house fire.

Cripe, 58, has donated dozens of blankets to various organizations. She has given to the Greeley fire station, the Greeley Santa Claus project, the Edgewood fire station, and The Ronald McDonald room at St. Luke's Hospital. She learned to make the tie blankets five years ago and uses kits with various patterns and colors.

Clayton Ridge seniors will take a hard look at the financial realities of life during Reality Check, a day-long simulation held at Prairie du Chien High School on April 22. Students will engage in activities with over 40 real businesses to gain insight and understanding of the pressures associated with living costs and monthly spending once they leave the nest.

New Guttenberg banners

Connie Backes and Austin Greve display the new banners that will soon go up in Guttenberg, replacing the banners that welcomed RAGBRAI bicyclists in 2014. The 38 new banners will welcome visitors traveling along the highway and in the business district. The attractive new banners were purchased at a cost of approximately $3,300 by the local RAGBRAI committee, using remaining funds from that event. The Grand View University Choir from Des Moines will perform at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 19, at 5:30 p.m. as part of its ten-day 2016 spring tour through Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana.

The tour program is structured around key elements of Christian worship: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Each cluster of pieces throughout the program expands on these ancient texts through the fresh choral sounds of composers such as Andrea Ramsey, Ola Gjeilo, James Fritschel, Knut Nystedt, Jean Berger, David Cherwien, and others.
