Experts comment on airborne crystalline silica

There was standing room only at the April 28 meeting of the frac sand mining impact study group, where special guests Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy and David Osterberg of the University of Iowa presented findings on the effects of silica sand on air quality. Many Guttenberg residents attended the meeting, held in Elkader, alongside landowners and neighbors of the potential future underground mines.

As if that isn't frightening enough, for the next five years of your young life, you are left in the care of a wicked old housekeeper and her nasty, troublemaking cat. During this time, your once-loving father slips into depression, losing himself in his work.

Reservations due May 29 for St. Mary/IC alumni banquet

St. Mary/ Immaculate Conception alumni committee invites all those who attended St. Mary High School and St. Mary Immaculate Conception Grade School to the annual alumni banquet on  Saturday,  June 4,  at St. Mary’s Brinkmann Hall in Guttenberg.

The Heritage Room  opens at 4 p.m.  Mass will be offered at 5:30 p.m., and a social hour and dinner will follow Mass in Brinkman Hall.  Dinner tickets are $10.

School board sets last day of school

The Clayton Ridge Community School Board of Directors met in special session on Wednesday, April 27. Members in attendance were John Heying, Alicia Helle, Mike Finnegan, Kathy Ihde, Christine Aulwes, Jason Reimer and Ellen Johnson.  Also in attendance were Shane Wahls, Andy Peterson, David Schlueter and Mary Seifert.

Board members named the last day of the 2015-16 school year as June 1 with a 2:30 p.m. dismissal and teacher in-service days held on June 2, 3 and 6.

High school senior Logan Bries of Guttenberg recently became the newest – and youngest – member of local historic preservation commission. He keeps his own ever-evolving collection of antique objects and documents, and has a genuine desire to get involved in the community.

After Dustin Eglseder was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2007, his family, friends and the community at large came together to support the young man. Dustin's mother Rose, his father John and sister Amy Jo recalled that the love and support they received from everyone was astounding. They wondered, "How could we ever repay everyone for all their kindness? We felt like it was time to pay it forward."

Alzheimer's support group observes five-year anniversary

When Guttenberg resident Dave Poggenklass lost his mother to Alzheimer’s Disease, he knew he wanted to help others in a similar situation. He connected with Joan Eulberg, of Garnavillo, whose mother also had the disease. Five years ago the two took a course through the Alzheimer’s Association and became the leaders of a support group in Guttenberg.

Couple discovers Guttenberg by boat, buys motel

The past six months have been a whirlwind for Patty and Dave Schwarz. On Oct. 26, they sold their Clinton moving company after 25 years in business. Two days later, they purchased the Guttenberg Motel. Both Patty and Dave were raised in Clinton and while it had always been their home, they were ready to make a change.
