By Molly Moser

September 23 is the first day of fall – and it’s also National Fall Prevention Awareness Day. While falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury for people 65 years of age and older, they are not an inevitable part of aging. That’s why the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging is joining forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the Falls Free® Coalition to take a stand to prevent falls.

In February of 2013, Mel and Donna Christianson made an offer of $10,000 to the Northeast Iowa Farm Antique Association as seed money for an endowment fund. The Christiansons challenged the Association to match that amount in one year, and Fred and Ellen Phelps of Colesburg rose to the occasion. This year, for the first time, the organization began drawing interest on the endowment fund.

Les and Em's Drive-In reunion for staff and customers

Les and Em's Drive-In was owned and operated by Lester and Emma Aulwes from 1958 to 1978. A reunion for customers and employees is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20 at PromiseLand Winery in rural Guttenberg. (Photo submitted)

In 1958, Guttenberg locals Emma and Lester Aulwes decided to buy a restaurant on Highway 52. For the next 20 years, they peeled pounds upon pounds of potatoes, made root beer floats, and sold burgers and fries as Les and Em’s Drive-In.

Over the course of those two decades, the popular restaurant served hundreds, if not thousands, of customers and employed many young people from the area – including students who left school during the lunch hour to wait on customers.

“People say all we do is farm,” says a young woman fishing on a set of docks. “They say there’s nothing to do here,” a couple kayaking tells the camera. “And all we grow is corn,” smiles a woman walking through grape vines with a glass of wine. “We’re in the right place to make memories,” say a group of campers enjoying a fire. “Come see our view in Guttenberg, Iowa,” a young family suggests, standing on the levee with the mighty Mississippi flowing past.
