Local producers prepare for spring Turkey River Farm welcomes guests, offers CSA

“For me, it was food and cooking,” said Pete Kerns. Kerns is originally from suburban Chicago and today co-owns Turkey River Farm with his wife, Natasha Hegmann, in Elkport. “I started working for a caterer in high school and gradually came to understand how better food comes from local farms, smaller farms, and farms that have some of the values that we have. I studied some sustainable agriculture in college, worked with some urban agriculture organizations and did some organizing for sustainable, fair food.”

Dueling pianos at Mar. 4 Extravaganza

The Dueling Pianos of Andy Anderson and Mike Leeds will be the featured entertainment on Saturday, March 4, at Extravaganza 2017, the annual fund-raiser for St. Mary IC School in Guttenberg.

The event will take place at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg and will feature a social hour, raffle and silent auction starting at 5 p.m. A grilled smoked Iowa pork chop dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by the evening's entertainment.

February is a month for hearts – candy hearts, paper hearts, and human hearts. American Heart Month, federally designated in 1964, reminds us that cardiovascular diseases are still the leading global cause of death. One Guttenberg resident knows all too well the effects of a malfunctioning heart. After a decade dealing with swollen joints and doctors appointments, local dairy farmer Dan Meyer was forced to make a life-altering decision when doctors realized he would need open heart surgery.

Local employers respond to workforce skills survey

The Guttenberg Economic and Industrial Development Committee has released the results of a skills survey created by the Chamber of Commerce and administered by GEIDC to a dozen local businesses of different types, from retail to healthcare to service and manufacturing.

Proposed city budget calls for drop in property tax levy rate

The Guttenberg city council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 6, on the annual  budget for the coming fiscal year. For the second consecutive year, the new budget calls for a small decrease in the city's tax levy rate. The budget anticipates approximate expenditures and revenues of $6.6 million.

The proposed budget covers the fiscal year from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018. If approved, the proposed rate per $1000 valuation on regular property would be $14.78261. This compares to the current year's rate of $14.97794.

Clayton Ridge School district voters approve levy increase

Voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School District on Feb. 7 approved a public measure providing for an increase in the tax levy for physical plant and equipment improvements at the Guttenberg and Garnavillo school campuses. Voters authorized a 10-year levy representing an increase of 67¢ over the current PPEL.

City council sets budget hearing, eyes water increase, hears updates

The Guttenberg city council at its monthly meeting on Feb. 6 adopted a budget for the coming fiscal year, moved forward on a water rate increase, and heard updates from the hospital task force and on the Garber Road bridge project. 

Mayor Russ Loven called the meeting to order with council members Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling present, along with Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Care Center earns five-star rating

Forty percent of all nursing home residents live in one- or two-star facilities (as reported by the Kaiser Family Foundation in May of 2015), and recent changes in the rating system have made reaching the top even more difficult. “According to U.S.A. Today, nearly one third of the nation’s nursing homes are getting lower scores,” said Guttenberg Care Center Administrator Dr. Janette Simon. “Only 22 percent of the 15,505 nursing homes in the U.S. are five-star rated. Iowa is among the highest rated in the country.”

Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce Director Emily Sadewasser sat down with Emily Yaddof, Elkader Main Street Director, for a Q&A about the opportunites, challenges, and logistics of the Main Street Program. 

Sadewasser and chamber board members have been investigating the Main Street Program for improving Guttenberg’s downtown shopping district since a public meeting in October with Jim Engle, director of the Iowa Downtown Resource Program.

"Hidden in Plain Sight" exhibit coming to Guttenberg Feb. 15

“Hidden in Plain Sight” is a unique, interactive exhibit which will to open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Clayton Ridge High School in Guttenberg during parent/teacher conferences.  

The event is hosted by the 5C Coalition (Clayton County Community Collaboration Council) and will bring adults into a mock teenager bedroom. The adults will explore the exhibit, identifying indicators of substance abuse and other risky behaviors.
