Local nurse, area students lend a helping hand in Homacho

According to the World Health organization, 60 women and girls die during childbirth every single day in Ethiopia. A group of local Confirmation students were called to action for these women, packing 120 birthing kits for mothers in Homacho, Ethiopia.

Pool committee speaks to council

The Guttenberg city council, at its regular monthly meeting on July 3, heard a presentation from the swimming pool committee.

Mayor Russ Loven led council  members Steve Friedlein, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub and Austin Greve through the agenda. Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume was also in attendance.

Barricading doors and applying tourniquets isn’t your typical middle school classroom lesson, but for Clayton Ridge students, it’s become second nature. During a violent intruder drill on Saturday, July 8, 50 students and teachers participated in an exercise that could potentially save their lives and the lives of others in an active shooter situation.

Turkey and dressing sandwiches... I know, it makes my mouth water just thinking about them, too. On numerous occasions my grandma, Betty Schmitt, whipped up a roaster or two of turkey and dressing sandwiches and donated it to a youth or adult baseball/softball tournament held at one of the ball fields in Guttenberg.

About 20 additional hospital staff and community members waited anxiously for the task force to begin their presentation.

Supervisors discuss security at courthouse

Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi and Deputy Dave Tschantz met with the Clayton County Board of Supervisors June 26 to discuss security at the Clayton County Courthouse.  

Sheriff Tschirgi showed the supervisors a supervisory order from the Iowa Supreme Court that establishes a statewide weapons policy concerning the carrying of weapons in the Courthouse.

In 2013, the annual expense for electrical usage on Guttenberg city streetlights and major security lights was around $13,000. The City of Guttenberg began updating all fixtures, sensors and bulbs that year with more energy efficient models, leading the way in Clayton County. “At last fiscal year, the expense was $4,060 – a savings of 68 percent,” reported Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume at the first quarterly breakfast of the Clayton County Energy District in Guttenberg on Friday, June 23.
