When plans were being made for our annual Farm and Field special section, I contacted U.S. Senator Joni Ernst through her press office with a list of ag-related questions. I’m pleased to share her answers here instead of the special section. Our Farm and Field section is inserted in this week’s Trader. Copies are also available at the Register office.
 

Register: The Iowa Legislature just passed legislation to help with revenue for needed road and bridge repairs in rural Iowa. Do you see any additional federal funding help coming as well?

BLOOD DRIVE

A few years ago, blood donations nationwide were so low that serious shortages were predicted. While the supply is steadier today, donating blood remains an important cause, which is one of the reasons that Central students are backing a local blood donation effort.

School upgrades, $6 million needed for improvements

A $6 million bond referendum for improvements to the Central School building could go before voters as early as June 30. If it passes, work at the school could start in 2016 with completion of the project following in about 36 months.

Long before area gardeners set the first tender vegetable plants into the ground, Central students will be enjoying fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes and leafy lettuce grown in a basement-level classroom. And they’ll continue harvesting and eating the veggies until the school year ends.

Bells ring out at Peace

Throughout almost any town you can hear church bells ring from their towers each Sunday.  However, on the third of each month, September through May, you can hear 1 1 sets of hand bells ringing from within Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader at the 9 a.m. worship service.
