Looking back - Top local news stories of 2015

One of the top local news stories of 2015 was the first-place finish at the state cross country meet for Coach Mark Bauder and the Central girls’ cross country team. Pictured at left are, front row (l-r), Ciera Deitchler, Desi Weber, Ashley Funk, Ellie Kuehl and Cassie Larson; and back row (l-r), Coach Bauder, Emily Asche, Anna Tuecke, Haley Schroeder and Hannah Kuehl. Also in sports news was another perfect season of regular play for Central’s football team.

News organizations across the U.S. have already compiled their lists of “top news stories for 2016” and, for the most part, tragedies like terrorist attacks, mass shootings, climate change and Europe’s immigrant crisis top their lists. Much closer to home, however, the news was decidedly more upbeat with a state high school cross-country championship and a successful first-ever Art in the Park event.

Letters to Santa - All I want for Christmas. . . .

There were many Santa sightings in Elkader throughout the holiday season. One of the most recent was Santa’s visit to FreedomBank, which is where Sadey Arnold, daughter of Trevor and Rachel Arnold, Elkader, found him.

For several years, the Register’s holiday tradition has been to share letters to Santa written by young Central students. This year, students in the three combined second/third grade classes participated. Their letters are published here just as we received them. We made no attempt to edit, correct or censor.

We hope you enjoy these letters as much as we did. Many thanks to the students and their teachers for continuing this tradition.

Picture this: In 1895, when Elkader was still a young town with just a handful of retail shops, a well-known cabinetmaker relocated here from Garnavillo. He and his partner built a structure on Main Street, which locals called the Regan and Witt Building after the two men who built it—William E. Witt, the cabinetmaker, and Mr. Regan, his partner.

A FAMILY TALE

By Pam Reinig

A well-documented family history needn’t be a dry read with limited audience appeal. In fact, as former Elkader resident Larry Gamble has proven, a collection of family stories can read like a page-turning novel with unexpected twist, turns and tidbits—especially if the writer is as candid and forthcoming as Gamble. He doesn’t flinch from sharing stories that others might be reluctant to disclose, which makes his book all the more readable by people not even related to him.
