There will be a Republican primary to decide which of two candidates will face Patti Ruff for the Iowa House of Representatives, District 56 seat.

Voters will go to the polls June 7 to determine whether Kristi Hager, Waukon, or Lowell Engle, Harper’s Ferry, will face Ruff, who is seeking re-election to the position she’s held since 2012. District 56 encompasses Allamakee County and much of Clayton County.

Dreams do come true…with scrutiny and hard work. Not only being invited to step into almost any house, but actually being welcome to explore the whole edifice, has always been a dream come true for Tara Follon. As more and more people observed this vivid interest in the daughter of Craig and Tracy Follon of Volga, someone suggested that she should become an architect. “I remember only being in fourth grade at the time,” Tara recalls, “but that was when I decided I wanted to be an architect.”

Jamie Wingert made a solo trip to Africa last August but she hopes to have a traveling companion when she returns there in July. Wingert’s 12-year-old daughter, Mylee, might accompany her mom if the Central sixth grader can raise the necessary funds.

There will be a hint of somberness to this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Elkader as the event moves forward without its remaining co-founder. Pat Keleher, who launched the parade in 1992 with his good friend, Pat Finley, died February 19 at the age of 77.

Though it’s been two years since Pastor Mark Lee left Grace Evangelical Free Church for full-time mission work, his connection to the congregation and the people of Elkader is as strong as ever. In fact, they’re the biggest supporters—spiritually and financially—of his present effort. In just eight days, the people of Grace E-Free and folks from three other Elkader-area churches last year raised $20,000 to help purchase land for a church and school in Guatemala.

CENTRAL FFA HAS A BUSY YEAR

It’s been a busy year for Central FFA. Three students, Ted Hilgerson, Luke Orr and Andrey Shirbroun, showed their steers at the Iowa State Fair in August with impressive results. Earlier last summer, the Central group joined with the Tri-Star and Ed-Co FFA chapters for a livestock judging contest at the Clayton County Fairgrounds. Central FFA member Tom Shirbroun was the high-scoring senior individual.
