FIVE CHURCHES, ONE PRIEST

When Father Paul Peters retired earlier this year, the task of shepherding the parishes of St. Joe’s, Elkader, St. Mary’s, Strawberry Point, and Sacred Heart, Volga, became the responsibility of Father John Haugen, who was already pastor of St. Mark’s, Edgewood, and St. Patrick’s in Colesburg. Due to a shortage of priests, Fr. Haugen now finds himself in the position of several priests in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, who are pastors to multiple parishes.

Welcome faculty and staff - Six new faces at Central Schools

Classes being today at Central Community Schools and in addition to new room assignments, new classes and new routines, students will find a few new faces, as well. The district has hired four teachers, a school nurse and a social worker.

Though Central students got a summer break from classroom work, administrators stayed busy with myriad responsibilities including several related to the upcoming improvements made possible by the successful bond vote last spring. The Register asked Superintendent Nick Trenkamp questions about the work he’s doing to move the renovation project forward. Here are his responses:

Master Gardeners - Group hopes garden idea takes root

The newly revitalized Clayton County Master Gardeners group wants to plant an idea in the minds of other gardeners: If your vegetable patch has produced more produce than you can consume, consider donating your surplus to the Clayton County Food Shelf.

Clayton County Courthouse - Clock restoration moves forward

The face of the Clayton County Courthouse clock has been restored to its original state. The rest of the renovation work will be completed next summer.

KRUSE IS TOWN’S NEWEST OFFICER

If Elkader’s newest police officer looks a bit familiar, it’s because she’s a hometown girl. Kerra Kruse, who was sworn into office last week, is a 2014 Central High School graduate. Kruse has been attending the University of Northern Iowa majoring in criminology. At UNI, she got significant practical experience in law enforcement as a student patrol officer.

Lego legacy - Final bricks added to 2-year project

Tim Finley and his children, Declan and Jillian, survey the scale-model Lego replica of Fennelly’s Irish Pub, the Elkader business co-owned by Finley and his wife, Trisha.

A rather serendipitous discovery was a Lego piece that bears a striking resemblance to Sweet Corn Days mascot. It occupies a place of honor in the Lego replica of the Finelys’ pub.
