After seeing the movie “Wonder” and listening to their homeroom teacher read the book it’s based on, Central 4th and 5th graders started writing notes about classmates doing nice things.

After more than two decades with the City of Elkader, Public Works Director Jerry Gamm retired last Friday.  Gamm joined the department in 1994 and became its head around 2002.  During that time, Gamm and his co-workers have been involved with everything from filling potholes on city streets to fighting numerous floods and cleaning up the aftermath.

ROHAN RETURNS TO ELKADER

Despite the threat of an impending snowstorm, about 180 members of the American Legion and guests from all over Northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin packed Johnson’s Reception Hall May 23 to hear National Commander Denise Rohan speak about her goals. Rohan, who was born in McGregor and grew up in Elkader, was elected as the first female Commander of the American Legion last August at the Legion’s National Convention in Reno, Nevada.

Central greenhouse - Cultivating an interest in gardening

Food Corps Service Member Katie Lower and Central student Brittnee Pash tend to plants in the Central greenhouse. Students have grown lettuce and tomatoes for the school’s salad bar.

Thanks to a growing interest in gardening and the availability of a greenhouse, Central students have been able to stock the school salad bar with leaf lettuce and cherry tomatoes during the winter months.

Moser Pharmacy - Business owners announce retirement

Jay and Kay Moser have sold their pharmacy to a Manchester couple who own stores in Strawberry Point and Sumner.

For more than 100 years, there’s been a pharmacy at the corner of Main and Cedar Streets in downtown Elkader. And for nearly 30 years, Jay and Kay Moser have been its owners. But that’s about to change. The building will remain a pharmacy but it will soon be under new ownership and new pharmacists will be standing behind its familiar raised counter.

WAITLIST IN PLACE FOR MEALS

Budget uncertainties mean some senior citizens in Clayton County won’t get free meals delivered to their homes.

According to Greg Zars, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging, a waitlist is in effect for the “meals on wheels” program until the agency learns how much of their current budget has to be returned to the state.

Central Schools Students make impressive gains in reading

As they read sentences together, Avery Fette and Zoe Armstrong place red chips on any digraphs they encounter. A digraph is a combination of letters that represent a single sound like the “ph” in telephone.

Central second graders give a “thumbs up” when a pair of words rhymes and a “thumbs down” when the pair doesn’t rhyme.

IOWA IS TOPS IN THE NATION

Iowa made national headlines last week after securing the top spot on the “Best States” rankings released by U.S. News and World Report. The magazine called Iowa the “best in the nation when it comes to infrastructure, healthcare, opportunity and education.” Last year, Iowa placed sixth.
