Brightening a traditional craft: Spinning, dying fibers transforms from hobby to business for McGregor woman

From her home in rural McGregor, Melissa Bucheit has found her own niche in the fiber arts world, spinning and dying yarn as well as knitting items. They’re available through her online shop, Melissa’s Yarn Barn, a venture she began right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Pictured are some of the brightly colored wool braids Melissa Bucheit has dyed.

Melissa Bucheit enjoys dying braids and yarn in bright, vibrant colors. “To me,” she said, “that’s where the fun is. I love experimenting and seeing what works. Sometimes I’ll see a picture or be outside and see a monarch butterfly and think, ‘That should be yarn.’”

Here is some of the yarn she's spun herself. She learned from her dad, who was self-taught, and has been practicing the craft for around 15 years.
