Collins resigns from McGregor Council

The McGregor Council confirmed the resignation of councilman Joe Collins at its Sept. 16 meeting. 

The resignation is effective immediately, as Collins said he plans to move out of the area. Two years remain on Collins’ term, with the seat up for election in Nov. 2017.

“You have two options,” attorney Mike Schuster advised the council. “You can make an appointment or you can call a special election.”

Iowa State Education Association President visits MFL MarMac

While visiting area schools, Wawro said she was especially interested to learn more about reading literacy. She spoke candidly with Roberta Hass, Kathy Koether and Title 1 teacher Sherri Kerr about the impact legislation has on it.

In Hass’ second grade room, Wawro asked the kids about their favorite books and why being a teacher is a good job. She also told them that what they learn in school today, particularly reading, will aid them in their future careers and as parents.

An educator from Cedar Rapids, Wawro has served as the ISEA President since April 2012. 

“It’s nice to see things firsthand,” she said, noting that touring regions of the state is a good way to gain information.

Marquette, McGregor, Luana to have contested city council races in Nov. 3 election

The Sept. 17 filing deadline for city government offices has come and gone and the candidates are set for the upcoming Nov. 3 election.

In Marquette, Pamela Brodie-Fitzgerald, Tracy Melver and Eleanor Soulli are running for two seats on the council. Incumbents Jason Winter and Galen McShane did not file. No candidates filed for the office of mayor, which is being vacated by Norma Mason.

Incumbents Rogeta Halvorson and Joe Muehlbauer will battle Jason Echard for two seats on the McGregor council. Incumbent mayor Harold Brooks is running unopposed.

Monona Council updated on sanitary sewer project

Engineer Marc Ruden, of IIW, Inc., updated the Monona Council on the status of the city’s phase II sanitary sewer drainage collection system improvement project at its Sept. 21 regular meeting. 

“We’re at the point where we’re putting the projects out to bid finally,” Ruden said, noting that bid letting for the work will be held Oct. 15, while the council is expected to award the contract at its Oct. 19 meeting.

There will be two contracts for the project, one for the collection system rehabilitation and another for lift station and waste water treatment facility improvements.

The engineer’s estimated cost for both parts is nearly $1.8 million, Ruden said.

Elementary student advisory groups take on leadership roles at school


The third grade advisory group for the first nine weeks of school includes (left to right) Parker Kuehl, Quinn McGeough, Jacob Schellhorn, Will Hopes, Lacey Upton, Addison Buchheit, Ava Kishman and Morgan Jacobson.

The second grade advisory group for the first nine weeks of school is Jerica Wille, Devon Meyer, Moriah Moser, Cora Keehner, Will Howes, Aidan Meyer, Weston Fuelling and Clayton Henkes.

Beginning this year, MFL MarMac Elementary has two student advisory groups, one for second grade and another for third grade. 

They meet alternating once each six school days at lunch. Each advisory has eight total members. Six are selected from the Student of the Week Award winners. There is always one boy and one girl serving in advisory from each class section. The other two members were chosen by the original six as at-large members from the entire class pool. All advisory member students serve for nine weeks and then choose their own successor for the next nine-week school term.

Elementary guidance counselor Kurt Gaylor said the purpose of the student advisory is to:

—Have students take ownership over decisions for special events and other school activities.

Immerse yourself in Marquette’s railroad history Sept. 19, as the Marquette Depot Museum and Information Center presents its annual Railroad Days celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with caricature drawings by local artist John Mundt, along with little barrel rides for the kids.

The Hole in the Sock Gang 1880s street theater group will perform at 11 a.m., with the bad guys attempting to rob the train. Watch to see if they’ll get away with the money.

School board approves annual progress report, goals

The MFL MarMac School Board approved the district’s annual progress report and goals for the next year at its monthly meeting Sept. 14.

Teacher Jen Wilwert gave the presentation, breaking down student proficiency, by grade level, in reading, science and math on the Iowa Assessment.

In reading, all grade levels showed students at least 69.2 percent proficient, with the highest level in last year’s ninth and 11th graders, at over 90 percent. That put MFL MarMac above the AEA and state in two-thirds of grades three through 11.

Churches collaborate to offer inter-generational Bible study

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 23, McGregor’s First Congregational and First Lutheran Churches will collaborate to offer inter-generational Bible study sessions for area residents of all faiths.

The sessions will be held each week, on Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Through the fall, sessions will be held at the First Congregational Church, but will eventually be held at both churches. The program will run until May 18, 2016.

The Monona Chamber and Economic Development (MCED) welcomed its newest member, Brenen’s Interior and Exterior Painting, of Luana, to the community Sept. 8 with a ribbon cutting event. Owned by Brenen Steele, the business offers interior and exterior painting services for commercial, residential and agricultural buildings.

Originally from southeast Minnesota, Steele said he’s a second-generation painter.

“My dad taught me to do things right the first time,” he told those gathered at the ribbon cutting. Steele said he focuses on doing a nice job and trying to please his customers.

The McGregor riverfront took on a different look the last two weeks, as the decades-old Holiday Shores Motel was torn down, leaving behind an unhindered view of the Mississippi. 

As news of the tear-down spread via the North Iowa Times Facebook page, many current and former residents, as well as visitors to the area, took to the social networking site to voice their thoughts. As of Sept. 4, the original post had reached nearly 15,000 people, was shared 111 times and accumulated nearly 40 comments, with people sharing memories and speculating about the future of the property.
