Adeline Maxine Hammel, 93, of McGregor, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at Great River Care Center, McGregor. Adeline Maxine was born Jan. 22, 1926, to George and Mildred (Lamphere) Ingles at home in Lodomillo Township, Littleport. She attended country school in Mays Prairie in Waterville.

In her younger years, Adeline worked as a waitress at Indian Isle for many years. Adeline also worked at 3M in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She loved to travel, read and play cards.

Football players reflect on historic season, but stress there’s more to come

The first district title in school history, the first winning season since 1992, and the only 9-0 undefeated regular season in school history—to say it’s been a historic year for the MFL MarMac football program is an understatement. But when the postseason starts this Friday, the players want to make one thing clear: they’re not done yet.

“We are doing something we haven’t done in a long time, but we’re taking it as if we’re not satisfied,” said junior Max Havlicek, who was one of 11 players that recently sat down to reflect on the team’s success. “We’re not looking back at the season yet. We still have so much more to prove.”

Middle school girls bring home state cross country championship

The MFL MarMac Middle School girls cross country team won the Class 1A Eighth Grade Girls State Championship at the Washburn Classic in Ankeny on Oct. 19. The achievement was a first in school history and came just a few days after the team claimed the Upper Iowa Conference title.

First-year head coach Ashley Simon admitted state wasn’t even on the team’s radar when they started the season.

“We never even knew about it until another athletic director came up to me at a meet and said, ‘I’ve been seeing your times. Are you going to state?’” she shared.

Winter parking restrictions begin Nov. 1

With winter approaching, residents in Marquette and McGregor are reminded that winter parking restrictions will go into effect beginning Nov. 1, and continue through March 31. 

In Marquette, parking is prohibited between 2 and 8 a.m. as follows:

• North Street - Park on the north side of the street (even numbered address) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and park on the south side of the street (odd numbered address) on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Madonna Melcher

Madonna F. Melcher, 92, of Decorah, formerly of Harpers Ferry and Waukon, died on Oct. 18, 2019, surrounded by family at Wellington Place, where she had resided since December 2016. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Living Faith United Methodist Church in McGregor, with Pastor Deb Parkison officiating. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery, in rural Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

MFL MarMac Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier has been recognized as the Iowa High School Speech Association’s (IHSSA) Fine Arts Administrator of the Year. Conceived in 2005 by the IHSSA’s executive committee, the award is presented to a distinguished individual of statewide reputation and outstanding accomplishments who has shown dedication and commitment to the IHSSA and arts activities in their school beyond normal expectations.

MFL MarMac board voices support for fieldhouse, elementary addition project

The MFL MarMac School Board, at its Oct. 14 meeting, voiced support for the district’s proposed fieldhouse and facilities improvement project.

Plans currently include constructing one full competition gym, which could be divided into two full-size practice courts, in the area behind the music addition at the Monona Center, where the tennis courts are currently located. The roughly 32,000-square-foot facility is projected to hold 1,200 people, making it large enough to host district events. The fieldhouse would also feature a walking/running track that could be accessible to the public, as well as a commons area, concession stand for both indoor and outdoor events and bathrooms and locker rooms.

No temporary fix for McGregor sewer issues

The city of McGregor’s hopes to find a temporary fix for its sewer infiltration and inflow problems have been dashed. 

Mark Davy, with Davy Engineering, said his company has considered four or five different alternatives to give the community some breathing room until a larger-scale sewer improvement project for the 100 to 600 blocks of Main Street can be completed, but none will remedy the situation, which has resulted in eventual wastewater discharges to the Mississippi River.

Candidate Profiles: MFL MarMac School Board

Voters in the MFL MarMac School District will have a choice between four candidates to fill three open seats on the school board when they head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters in the Farmersburg and Wagner townships and the city of Farmersburg will vote at the Farmersburg Community Center; voters in the Giard, Grand Meadow and Monona townships and the cities of Luana and Monona will vote at the Monona Community Center; and the voters in Mendon Township and the cities of Marquette and McGregor will vote at the Marquette Community Center. Three incumbents— Sharon Greener, Tonya Meyer and Collin Stubbs—are on the ballot, and they are joined by newcomer Roberta Hass. The highest vote-getters will serve four-year terms on the board. The candidates recently shared their thoughts on some topics regarding MFL MarMac Schools.
