Shirley Ellis

Shirley E. Ellis, age 78, of Patch Grove, Wis., passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on April 12, 1941, the daughter of Roy and Edna (Jarms) Haberichter. Shirley, her father and her grandmother were all born in the same farmhouse located southeast of Monona. Shirley spent her early childhood in Clayton County, moved to the Patch Grove area in 1952 and graduated from Patch Grove High School in 1958. She married Jerry Ellis on Oct. 24, 1959, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley, Wis. Shirley and Jerry raised their family in the home that he built in 1960. Shirley was Patch Grove Village Clerk for 18 years and secretary/treasurer for the Patch Grove Fire Department for 31 years. Shirley enjoyed time spent with her family, reading, sewing, gardening and dancing with Jerry.

Iowa Caucuses less than two weeks away

After months of anticipation, the Iowa Caucuses are now less than two weeks away. Both Democratic and Republican voters from across the state will venture to their respective local precincts on Monday, Feb. 3, to participate in an event that, since 1972, has been the first primary season test for presidential candidates seeking their party’s nomination.

“It’s a time to gather and show your support for a candidate,” said Brian Bruening, chair of the Clayton County Democrats.

Fitness classes help seniors stay active

Live 2 B Healthy attendees like Esther Werges utilize bands, balls and other methods to stretch, lift and bend their way to better health. The goal is to improve balance, flexibility and strength.

Have a Heart Day brightens smiles for 30 years

Family Dentistry Associates of Monona will hold its annual Have a Heart Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, giving local kids ages 4 to 18 who haven’t recently seen a dentist an opportunity to receive free dental care. “We saw a need,” said Dr. Mark Fohey of how the event started 30 years ago. “It was something we could provide to the area to give back.” (Submitted photo)

Family Dentistry Associates of Monona will hold its annual Have a Heart Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, giving local kids ages 4 to 18 who haven’t recently seen a dentist an opportunity to receive free dental care.

The event, inspired by an idea Family Chiropractic Associates brought to Waukon, dates back to 1990. Both Family Dentistry and its sister clinic, Waukon Dental, have offered the service for 30 years, while Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien has taken part since opening 25 years ago.

“We saw a need,” said Dr. Mark Fohey. “It was something we could provide to the area to give back.”

Shirley Guyer

Shirley Jean Guyer, 79, of Luana, passed Jan. 14, 2020. She was born Sept. 29, 1940, to Henry Paul William Mueller and Viola Clarice (Thompson) Mueller. Shirley went to a one-room country school near St. Olaf for kindergarten through sixth grade. She attended seventh through 12th grades at the Luana High School and graduated in the class of 1959.

Shirley married Harold LeRoy Guyer on Oct. 5, 1963. After marriage, she lived on a farm near West Union as a farm wife, then moved back to her home farm by Luana in 1971. She worked a summer at the Elgin Corn Factory, and also loved working at the McGregor Ceramic Shop for 17 years before retiring in 1995.

School board sets March 3 special election for facilities project bond vote

Voters in the MFL MarMac Community School District will head to the polls on Tuesday, March 3, to decide if $7.8 million in general obligation bonds should be issued to fund an extensive facilities improvement project.

The school board authorized the special election at its Jan. 13 regular meeting, after recognizing a petition submitted by 191 eligible electors.

“That was way more signatures than we needed to bring it to vote,” said MFL MarMac Superintendent Dale Crozier. Based on the last school election, just 144 would have sufficed.

Trivia night provides a use for ‘useless’ knowledge

Throughout the winter, community members gather at McGregor’s Backwoods Bar and Grill every Thursday, at 7 p.m., for trivia night. It’s a chance to “socialize and try something new for an hour and a half,” said Janet Hallberg (standing), who compiles and reads the questions each week.

A group gathered at one table collectively groans, individuals muttering “I should have known that” under their breaths. Another contingent celebrates, cheering and high fiving after an educated guess turns out to be correct. It’s a common scene at Backwoods Bar and Grill each Thursday night throughout the winter, as community members compete in the McGregor establishment’s trivia night.

Wetlands Centre officially goes solar

The Driftless Area Wetlands Centre has flipped the switch on its $16,500 solar project, making the site the second in the city of Marquette to be powered with renewable energy.

The city council approved the project in September, spurred on by the success of the first system at well number four in the Timber Ridge Subdivision, which began operating around this time last year. The Wetlands Centre’s roof array was installed by Dubuque-based Eagle Point Solar in November.

Jacquelyn Lamb

Jacquelyn June Lamb, 93, of Farmersburg, passed away in her home on Jan. 6, 2020.

Jackie was born Jan. 10, 1926, to Fred and Olga (Becker) Ferguson.

She attended Pleasant Ridge School and graduated from McGregor High School in 1943. She went to Chicago to work, and met and married Kenneth Lamb in April of 1947. They lived in Chicago until 1950 when they moved back to the McGregor-Marquette area. In 1956, she began working at Effigy Mounds National Monument, retiring in 1986. Jackie was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She served as the president and sang in the choir. She was also a member of Pocket City American Legion Auxiliary for over 60 years. She loved to knit for everyone. She and Kenny especially enjoyed their retirement years camping in Texas.

Judith Ann Rodenberg

Judith Ann Rodenberg, 80, of Marquette, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wis. Judith Ann was born Nov. 13, 1939, to Alfred and Alice (Carlson) Siegele in McGregor. She graduated from McGregor High School.

Judith was united in marriage with Frank Rodenberg on June 1, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in McGregor. Five children were born to this union. Judy worked at McGregor Electronics for many years.
