“Most of the world follows it when it comes to sea mining or navigation of the sea,” explained Max Koeller. “We kind of follow the rules, but haven’t actually agreed. The U.S. is one of the very few countries who isn’t part of it.”

Still time to submit designs for Monona banner contest

Monona’s visioning committee, along with Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc., is sponsoring a contest to choose designs for the city’s new street banners. Like this example from Stewartville, Minn., the banners will be made of metal. Monona’s banners will be painted a solid color, though.

There’s still time to submit designs for Monona’s new street banners. The city’s visioning committee, along with Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc. (MCED), is sponsoring a contest that encourages residents of all ages to develop imagery they feel represents Monona.

“It can be pretty simple,” said MCED Executive Director Rogeta Halvorson, who explained the design must be in a stenciled, easy-to-cut-out form. “It could be a large butterfly or a tractor to represent the agricultural community around us. Look at how we’ve expanded trails and recreation in Monona.”

In Marquette, talks of renegotiating police district 28E agreement

One Marquette council member says the city should consider renegotiating the 28E agreement it has with the city of McGregor regarding the Mar-Mac Unified Police District. 

“I agree we need a police department,” said councilwoman Pam Brodie-Fitzgerald at Marquette’s Oct. 10 council meeting, “but we need to revisit who pays for what. What we pay is exponentially different per capita.” 

According to Brodie-Fitzgerald, Marquette currently contributes $316.92 per person, while McGregor pays $136.45 per person. 

“That’s a huge gap,” she remarked.

MFL MarMac enrollment is up

MFL MarMac’s enrollment currently sits at 780, up around 20 students. The district lost roughly that same amount last year. 

“We lost a slug of money last year, so now we’re back to zero on what we lost,” said superintendent Dale Crozier to the school board at its Oct. 8 meeting. “But it’s not time to celebrate just yet.” 

The senior class will graduate 62 students, while the incoming crop of kindergartners will also be around 60 students. Census data, said Crozier, predicts several years of neutrality.

Event showcases local manufacturing jobs

Last week, for the fourth year in a row, M’s Machine and Manufacturing Co. welcomed local students to its facility in Monona for a special Manufacturing Day tour.

Manufacturing Day has been celebrated nationally since 2012, on the first Friday of October, which is Manufacturing Month.

The goal, said M’s Machine Vice President Candace Drahn, is to showcase manufacturing jobs and highlight the importance of manufacturing to the community.

Your senior year of high school brings a range of emotions, from excitement and pride to nervousness and maybe even sadness. For MFL MarMac’s class of 1993, the first to graduate from the combined school, it was even more of an adventure. There were new classmates, new teachers and, for some, a new building and town. 

“In the fall of 1992, the integration was mostly positive,” recalled Jesse Pleggenkuhle, who recently gathered with some of his classmates for their 25th reunion. “I was nervous and anxious about this new school, but the students, teachers and staff were all very welcoming.”

Betty Jean Reeg

Betty Reeg, 87, of Monona, went to be with her Lord on Oct. 5. Betty Jean was born Nov. 11, 1930, at the McGregor Hospital, to Alfred Flexman and Alice Henrietta (Carlson) Siegele. She was baptized (sponsors were Betty’s grandparents, Carl and Emma Carlson) on Jan. 18, 1931 and confirmed Sept. 9, 1945 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural McGregor. 

Betty attended rural McGregor schools through the eighth grade, graduating from McGregor High School in 1949. Betty then moved to Cedar Rapids to attend the Hunter Business School, after which she secured employment in Savannah, Ill., as a clerk-typist in the Ordnance Depot office. There she met her love, Carlyle Vincent Reeg, being united in marriage Dec. 24, 1954, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bellevue. Two children were born to this union, Steven Carlyle and Sandra Jean.

Allen John Berns

Allen John Berns, 59, of Monona, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Great River Care Center of McGregor. Allen John was born Oct. 30, 1958 to Louis Henry and Wilma Ann (Duetmeyer) Berns in Dubuque. He graduated from MFL High School in 1977.

Allen was self-employed and in his spare time enjoyed fishing, classic cars, riding motorcycles and playing cards.

Allen is survived by his two daughters, Amy Berns of Monona,  and Kristina (Keith) Thompson of Monona; grandchildren, Drew and Mason Hird and Vivian Thompson; his father, Louis H. Berns of Monona; his brothers, Dan (Lisa) Berns of Farmersburg, Ron (Barb) Berns of Monona, Tom (Jo) Berns of Luana, and Brian (Kerri) Berns of Luana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

McGregor’s By the Spoonful will hold its first Mini Aronia Berry Fest Oct. 6-7, highlighting the benefits and potential uses of the antioxidant-rich fruit that’s seen a burst in popularity. 

“A lot of people have heard of them,” remarked By the Spoonful owner Katie Ruff of the dark purple berries sometimes referred to as chokeberries. They contain even more antioxidants than the blueberries one can buy in the store, making them a growing “superfruit” of choice. 

“But for most people, all they know is to put them in a smoothie,” Ruff noted. “They want to use aronia berries, but they just don’t know how. There are other things they can be.”

Potential buyer is interested in Garden View

A potential buyer is interested in purchasing Monona’s Garden View Senior Community. At the city council’s Sept. 24 meeting, mayor Lynn Martinson said the committee involved in the marketing and sale of the assisted living facility has received a letter of intent that it will sign and send back, giving the potential buyer the right to do due diligence in researching the property.

“It’s nothing binding,” stressed Martinson, who said he simply wanted to keep the council updated on where the committee currently stands.
