McGregor street a lights destination

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

“That’s what you drive down Ann Street for, to see the lights.”

Janet Hallberg is one of several McGregor home owners on the street’s 600 block who goes all out for Christmas. There are bright, colorful strands covering everything from porches and windows to trees, while holiday figurines dot yards. You’ll even spot Santa and his reindeer on a rooftop.

“For being little McGregor, we’re kind of a destination block to drive by and see them,” Hallberg said.

She’s lived at her home for 16 years and has put up lights annually.

TD's brings holiday cheer with Giving Tree

The Giving Tree at TD’s Sports Bar in Elkader sits surrounded by presents for those in need.

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

“Hopefully, this brings warmth and joy to everyone this holiday year,” Chelsea Armstrong, owner of TD’s Sports Bar in Elkader, said of the idea behind the establishment’s Giving Tree, currently surrounded by gifts for those in need from a community that thrives on supporting each other.

It was an idea Armstrong had even before owning TD’s, when a Facebook post caught her attention. The thought stuck with her, so this year, for the first time, she put the idea into action.

McGregor Council discusses riverfront zoning matters

By Audrey Posten, Times Register

The city of McGregor is taking steps to create a new W-3 waterfront - manufactured homes zoning district. The move, which comes at the recommendation of the city’s planning and zoning commission, is in reference to the four park model trailer homes at the north end of the Boatels property along the riverfront.

“[The owners] are trying to purchase the property and would like to be able to, if they need to at some point, replace the trailers. Currently, they’re non-conforming,” city administrator Lynette McManus told the council at its Dec. 16 meeting.

The other MFL MarMac school board members include Collin Stubbs, Joshua Grau, Jonathon Moser, Brian Meyer and Tonya Meyer.

In the future, the board might have some additional company at its table. Superintendent Dale Crozier proposed the idea of having a student participate in the monthly meetings.

“They couldn’t vote, but they would give input,” he shared. “It was just an idea to get more involvement.”

The Central boys basketball team started last week with an impressive hard-fought win against Central City, 48-45, but unfortunately dropped the next two contests: a close loss against Turkey Valley, 57-47, followed by a lopsided one against South Winneshiek, 77-44.

Coming off a week where the undersized team practiced rebounding and communication and minimizing turnovers, the Warriors made it all work against Central City. While the team came out a little flat, in the words of Coach Brady Stramer, they turned it on in the second quarter, taking a one-point lead into halftime.
