Central has need for substitutes

Gov. Kim Reynolds earlier this summer relaxed qualifications for substitute teachers, but even that might not be enough to offset the need. Locally, for example, Central will start the year with only nine substitutes. This time last year, they had 19.

“The drop is, in large part, due to COVID-19,” said Central Superintendent Nick Trenkamp. “Many of our subs are in the age range most affected by the virus, and are worried about returning and exposure.”

GRRRR goes virtual this year

The Great River Road - Road Race (GRRRR), held at Pikes Peak State Park for the first time in 17 years in 2019, will be held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even if it’s held outdoors, runners still tend to run in packs,” said organizer Duane Boelman. “We want this to be a yearly event, so we decided to make it a virtual event to keep the spirit alive.”

With the virtual race, runners or walkers can complete the 10K, 5K or kids fun run on their own time, without the large-scale crowd. The race can be completed any time in September or October, not just on the planned race day, Saturday, Oct. 3.

Warriors begin cross country season

At the Sept. 3 meet at MFL MarMac, McKenna Jaster was 13th in the JV standings.

Taylor Moser finished in the top 25 at the Sept. 3 meet at Tri-City Golf Course, in Luana.

Central's JV girls had three runners finish in the top 10 out of 21 runners at MFL MarMac, including Madylen Gregerson, who was seventh.

Brayden Finley ran a personal and career best time of 19:01 at Oelwein on Sept. 1.

The Central Warriors cross country season got underway on Sept. 1, at the Oelwein Huskies Invitational, where Delaney Scherf battled for the victory, defeating 178 other runners. It was a personal best for both the course and her cross country career, with a final time of 20:30.

Several other runners on the girls JV squad also finished with personal course records, including Hannah Asche, who was fourth, and Allie Mussman, who finished 10th, as well as Haley Mueller, Maria Medberry, Miley Wingert and McKenna Jaster. As a team, they ended the meet with a score of 72, finishing second behind Decorah, who scored a 26.

Missed tackles, limited offense lead to Central loss

Going into last Friday’s football game against the Springville Orioles, Central Head Coach Joe Koehn felt good about the match-up.

“Both teams have speed and some athletes who know how to use it. I am very excited to see how things play out…we have been focusing on staying low in all aspects of the game,” he said.

However, as the final whistle blew, the score showed a one-sided affair, as Springville defeated the Warriors 81-0.

Bulldog football team cruises to 2-0 record

The MFL MarMac football team upped its record to 2-0 Sept. 4, with a convincing 35-13 victory at Alburnett.

Like the previous week, where the Bulldogs’ special teams tallied two touchdowns before the offense even took the field, Friday night’s game got off to a fast start. Just 13 seconds in, sophomore Karter Decker returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and MFL MarMac went up 7-0.

Around a minute later, after a huge completion from senior quarterback Max Havlicek to senior receiver Cayden Ball, junior running back Cullen McShane scored from five yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 13-0 advantage.

Moser runs to fifth-place finish as MFL MarMac cross country season gets underway

In her first high school meet, Clare Grau finished 12th.

Caleb Nordheim led the MFL MarMac boys with a 13th-place finish on Sept. 3.

Sophomore Will Koether ran the course in 19:39.60, which was good for 16th place.

At last week’s meet, J.J. Lynd came in 32nd.

The MFL MarMac cross country team kicked off its season Sept. 3, in the lone home meet at Tri-City Golf Course outside Luana.

The team was led by junior Sydney Moser, who raced to a fifth-place finish with a time of 22:18.00. Freshman Clare Grau earned a time of 23:42.50, placing her 12th. Fellow freshmen Kaylee Walch and Ayla Gerndt finished 20th and 21st, respectively, with marks of 25:53.70 and 26:02.50. Ruby Koeller, another freshman, came in 26th at 28:43.60, while freshman Kaylee Nuehring took the 31st spot with a 30:04.70 time.

Central volleyball falls to 0-7

The Central Warriors volleyball team wrapped up the Midland Tournament on Sept. 5. They entered the tournament 0-3 on the season, and the struggles continued.

In match one, they took on the Cascade Cougars, dropping both sets, 21-5 and 21-11.

The team had five kills on 41 attempts, and was led by Kaitlyn Wiley with three. Ava Pensel earned the team’s four assists. In total, Central netted one ace serve on 17 serve attempts, with an 88.2 percent serve efficiency.

On defense, they scored 15 digs, seven of which went to Maddie Wille.

New Hampton, Turkey Valley too much for Bulldogs

The MFL MarMac volleyball team dropped to 0-3 last week, following losses to New Hampton and host Turkey Valley at a triangular on Sept. 1

The Bulldogs were swept by New Hampton, 2-0, in the first game, with set scores of 25-19 and 25-17.

In the second game, MFL MarMac fell to Turkey valley 2-1. The match-up started off well for the Bulldogs, who won the first set 25-17—their first set victory this season. They struggled to keep the momentum going in the final two, though, losing 25-14 and 15-12.

MFL MarMac will participate in another triangular this week, taking on West Central and host Maquoketa Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

From wood and resin: Artist uses lathe to create beautiful pieces

Creativity manifests itself differently for each person—just ask Ryan Chambers.

“I can’t draw a stick person,” he joked, “but I can make something out of wood or resin.”

With the materials as a base, the Monona artist, who began exhibiting at McGregor’s Left Bank Shop and Gallery earlier this year, uses a lathe to form them into beautiful, curved objects like bowls, vases and pots. He’s even developed custom items like duck calls and rings.

It all started around five years ago, with a woodturning interest and some instructional YouTube videos.
