Ivon H. Ihlenfeldt

Ivon was born May 29, 1923, in rural Clayton Center, to Ernst and Alma (Heuer) Ihlenfeldt. He lived all his life in the Clayton County area and attended rural Wagner Township grade school and graduated from Farmersburg High School. He was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg.

Iconic White Springs Supper Club reopened to the public for the first time in 15 years in June. Giving the McGregor restaurant a new lease on life is Jennifer Yager—great granddaughter of White Springs’ long-time owner Ethel Mann—and her husband Robert. The couple is joined in the venture by their friends, Brandon and Emily Schaefer.

Now two months in, they’re all still trying to catch their breath.

“We thought it would be busy,” confided Robert, “but we didn’t expect this support.”

In “God’s Country” is where Joleen Jansen and her family have resided for the better part of two decades, out of a love for the rural “hill country,” the river that runs through it and an Elkader community where friendships flourish and open-arms support is never far behind. 

“We are very fortunate to be in the community,” Joleen said. 

Such fortune has become vital as the COVID-19 pandemic continues marching through cities, suburbs and rural areas that thought they were immune.

Clayton County digital map, race tap into growing gravel biking trend

A new digital map prepared by Clayton County Conservation highlights gravel bike routes in the county—capitalizing on a growing trend among outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

“It’s this burgeoning thing throughout Iowa, this gravel biking. We have more roads per capita than any other state, so we’ve got a lot of resources there and now there are bikes developed to be specific to gravel,” said Kenny Slocum, resource manager/naturalist with Clayton County Conservation, who worked on the project with director Jenna Pollock.

After compromise, Elkader’s Carter Street Project approved

It’s been a long, complicated and sometimes, controversial few years for Elkader’s Carter Street project, but the issue appears to have come to a conclusion. During a spirited city council meeting Monday night, all sides discussed and defended their stances regarding the remaining concerns about street width, tree loss, public safety, parking and the devaluation of property. 

On the table for discussion was a resolution that would reduce the width of the road from 31 feet to 26 feet and the sidewalk from five feet to four feet.

Monona looking for new council member

The city of Monona is on the hunt for a new council member. 

Heather Lange, who was re-elected to a four-year term last November, has resigned because her family is moving. The city has 60 days to fill her seat by appointment—a decision the council plans to make in late-September.

Anyone who is interested in joining the council is encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the city.

City will plan to “close” trails in off season

At its Aug. 3 meeting, the Monona Council approved a resolution to “close” city trails to the public in the off season, from Nov. 15 to April 1.

Bruce C. Bushkofsky

Bruce C. Bushkofsky, 66, of St. Cloud, Minn., died July 16, 2020, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minn.

Bruce was born Nov. 24, 1953, in McGregor, to Robert and Dorothy (Baade) Bushkofsky. He attended and graduated from Central Community High School in 1972, where he was on the state champion basketball team. After high school, Bruce worked as a meat cutter at the local grocery store and served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Elkader Volunteer Fire Department. Bruce was married to LaVonne Thorson on May 1, 1982, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader. They later moved to Lincoln, Neb., where Bruce began working as a meat counselor for Nash Finch. Their family moved to St. Cloud, Minn., in 1991, where he still worked as a meat counselor with Spartan Nash, a career he held for over 30 years.

Clair 'Bub' Kruger

Clair “Bub” Kruger, 74, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Littleport, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 9, 1946, in Greeley, the son of Calvin and Etna (Fierstine) Kruger. Clair was raised in Greeley and Edgewood and was a 1964 graduate of Edgewood-Colesburg High School. In 1965, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably until his discharge in 1967. 

On Feb. 11, 1967, Clair was united in marriage to Maxine Kruse at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. Two sons were born to this union. Over the years, Clair worked as a parts manager for several implement dealers and retired from the Bodensteiner Implement Company in Elkader.

Lyle D. Klingman

Lyle Dean Klingman, 77, of Volga, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Lyle was born Nov. 1, 1942, to Lee Emerald and Mildred (Hansel) Klingman. He graduated from Volga High School at the age of 16.

Lyle was united in marriage with Karon Buhr on Sept. 21, 1963, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Garrison. Karon passed away on Aug. 10, 2009. Lyle was then united in marriage with LaTeresa Music on Aug. 21, 2010. She passed away Nov. 17, 2012.
