Asphalt scam hits area

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a possible asphalt scam in the area.

Sheriff Mike Tschirgi is urging residents to beware of door-to-door solicitors who offer to pave or repair your driveway or sidewalk at a substantially lower price than most contractors. Many times, the solicitors will arrive unannounced and offer a special discount for leftover asphalt, promising to apply a 3- to 4-inch asphalt base, when in fact they only put down a 1 or 2-inch base.

These actions are in violation of Iowa law and the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office will investigate as such. If you have experienced a similar situation, write down the license plate number and contact the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Tschirgi provided some additional advice for those seeking driveway or sidewalk repairs:

•Obtain written estimates from multiple contractors and get in writing the terms of the contract.

Bloomington man dies in fall from ladder

A Bloomington man died Monday from injuries he sustained when he fell from a ladder three days earlier.

Law enforcement officials suspect cattle might have contributed to that fall.

Robert Mathre, 57, died Monday at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, according to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff's Department.

The release states that Mathre fell from a 24-foot ladder Friday while working at the Lonnie Holthaus farm on Pine Road in Mt. Ida Township. Mathre was fixing some fans he previously installed inside a free-stall barn, and “it is believed one of the cattle may have hit the ladder causing Mr. Mathre to fall,” the release states.

He was taken by ambulance to Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster and then airlifted to the hospital in Madison.

Teen dies after four wheeler strikes fence

An Iowa teenager died when he was thrown from an ATV near Guttenberg over the holiday weekend.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, at 3:04 a.m., the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of an ATV accident near 25094 Great River Road, about five miles north of Guttenberg on private property. Three subjects riding a four wheeler struck a fence, causing all three of the riders to be thrown from the ATV. A passenger, Kurtis Reidy, 16, of Winthrop, Iowa, was transported to the Guttenberg hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver, Tyler Schladetzky, 23, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was treated for minor injuries. A juvenile passenger was uninjured.

The Guttenberg Ambulance Service and Guttenberg Fire Department assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa DNR.

Carriage Classic brings dramatic equine driving to Prairie du Chien

Sharon Makurat of Whitewater, won the antique turnout class with a beautiful wicker phaeton vehicle pulled by a Welsh pony, Cynthia of Oxford, Mich.

On Sept. 11-13, many people from throughout the region are sure to attend the Midwest’s most elegant and lavishly appointed equine sport driving event, the Villa Louis Carriage Classic.

This year will mark the 35th anniversary of the Carriage Classic, which is held on the Villa Louis Historic Site on St. Feriole Island, 521 N. Villa Louis Road.

Some of the region’s finest horses and more than 100 new and restored carriages compete in a variety of arena and cross country events.

The Carriage Classic recalls the Villa Louis estate’s heyday as a farm for the breeding of horses for harness racing.

The Villa Louis—with much of the interior restored to its 1890s splendor—never looks better than during the late-summer equine classic.

Seneca, Ferryville to get high-speed Internet

What has become known as the Seneca-Ferryville Broadband Expansion Project is now underway and is designed to significantly increase Internet speed for numerous households in those areas of Crawford County. The project also has the potential to attract businesses to the Ferryville and Seneca areas.

Man spotted in abandoned Satter Building

The privately-owned Satter Building, located on Dunn Street in Prairie du Chien, has sat abandoned for several years. A suspected criminal was spotted inside the building Monday night. Prairie du Chien police officers are currently trying to locate him.

The Prairie du Chien Police Department is trying to locate a suspect who was found in the abandoned O.E. Satter Building in Prairie du Chien Monday night, Aug. 31, but fled on foot from the scene, according to Police Chief Chad Abram.

At 9:40 p.m., Monday, the police department was notified of a male suspect in the Satter Building at 111 W. Dunn St. Police officers contacted Deputy Joe Breeser and K9 Breck to assist with entering the building.

Officers arrived on scene and noticed the suspect inside the building. They gained entry through a broken window and attempted to apprehend and question the suspect. As the officers entered the building, the suspect fled on foot to another portion of the building and eventually out of the building. Officers then pursued the suspect, who was last seen near the Mississippi River, west of the Highway 18 Bypass.

SMRT Bus adding La Farge route, Dock Holiday relocates boat docks

Council approves TIF assistance for new clinic

The Scenic Mississippi Regional Transit (SMRT) Bus system looks to add a La Farge route to its service in the near future. This decision is based upon anticipation of 5,000 additional rides annually and $5,000 in program support each year from La Farge’s Organic Valley, which would be the catalyst for the extra rides.

The Prairie du Chien Common Council approved an amendment to operating assistance for the system during its bi-monthly meeting Tuesday night. The council also approved a services agreement with Organic Valley.

“We’re always looking at expanding the services of the SMRT system and making it more efficient,” City Planner Garth Frable stated, “especially when the state continues to cut back on our aid to systems like this.”

The Waterfront Community Revitalization and Resiliency Act would support community efforts to make the most of water resources by attracting water-dependent industries and investments that leverage water sustainably, revitalizing neighborhoods, and enhancing recreation and tourism.
