for veteran’s families stops in Prairie du Chien

Navy veteran Chris Ring was escorted by the Prairie du Chien Fire Department fire and rescue boat from Lock and Dam 9 to the beach on St. Feriole Island on Saturday as part of Ring’s swim down the length of the Mississippi River.

Lack of EMTs and first responders in rural areas creates concern in communities

Squads are looking for volunteers every day. Ride-along programs give people the opportunity to see exactly what goes on when an EMT goes out.

When you call 911, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or first responders are one of the first groups to help you in a time of great need. What would happen if these brave souls weren’t available?

 

“If you’re not part of the solution, you might be the problem,” expressed West Grant EMT Denny Cathman. “About six years ago, we started seeing our numbers drop, and it has continued ever since.”

 

Denny has been with the West Grant rescue squad approximately 12 years; he drove for five years first, then became an EMT. He was a firefighter for 35 years prior to dedicating most of his time to the EMS.

Local man charged with fifth OWI

A 41-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated - fifth offense.

Robert L. Whetzal faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Whetzal was stopped for speeding in the city of Prairie du Chien and then placed under arrest for OWI.

Whetzal was previously convicted of OWI four times, according to the complaint.

Frazier charged with stealing truck

An 18-year-old Gays Mills man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Colton A. Frazier faces up to a $10,000 fine and six years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, witnesses stated that Frazier stole a pickup truck from a residence on County Road S in the town of Haney.

Local man charged with fifth OWI, possession of meth, possession of marijuana

A 31-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of marijuana—second and subsequent offense, one count of possession of methamphetamine, one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated—fifth or sixth offense, and one count of operating while revoked.

Michael J. Seitz faces up to $32,500 in fines and 14 years of imprisonment of convicted of all counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a Prairie du Chien police officer stopped the Seitz vehicle near East Taylor Street on July 6. A search revealed a plastic baggie of marijuana, and several baggies of meth, along with various items of drug paraphernalia.

Seitz also admitted to the police officer that he had smoked marijuana about two hours prior to the traffic stop, the complaint said.

Seitz has previously been convicted of OWI four times and possession of marijuana once, according the complaint.

Ferryville man charged in marijuana case

A 57-year-old Ferryville man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of marijuana—second and subsequent offense, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Arnold Jay Harris faces up to $35,000 in fines and 13.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a traffic stop was initiated on the Harris vehicle in the town of Utica in Crawford County when the Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a live, growing marijuana plant in the back seat.

Seized in the subsequent search were three live marijuana plants in planting pots, a bottle of plant starter liquid fertilizer, a .22 caliber pistol and ammunition, a plastic baggie containing marijuana and a glass marijuana pipe, the complaint said.

Man charged with abusing patient

A 23-year-old La Crosse man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of intentionally abusing patients—bodily harm.

Kenneth R. Mackenzie faces up to a $10,000 fine and six years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a client of Lori Knapp Companies reported to staff members at Lori Knapp and at the Opportunity Center that he had been hit with a rod by Mackenzie, an employee of Lori Knapp.

Several bruises were observed to the clients’ legs and his eyes were black and blue and swollen. Bruises were also observed on the clients’ back as well as an open wound on his knee, the complaint said.
